The Second Charles Francis Adams
By Robin Friedman
I became interested in reading Charles Francis Adams' autobiography after reading a largely unsympathetic portrayal of the man in a new book by Richard White, "Railroaded" which examines the building and managmement of the transcontinental railroads following the Civil War. Adams served for six years as President of the Union Pacific Railroad before its 1890 bankruptcy and acquired the reputation of a reformer, which White finds mostly undeserved. In reading White's book, I had the impression that there was more to Adams than White wanted to admit.

Charles Francis Adams (1835 -- 1915) was the great grandson of John Adams and the grandson of John Quincy Adams. His father and namesake was the United States Ambassador to Great Britain during the Civil War and played a pivotal role in keeping Britain out of the conflict and in maintaining peace. Charles Francis Adams was also a strong presidential contender in his own right. Adams' younger brother Henry became famous as a historian and of the author of his own autobiography, "The Education of Henry Adams".

Charles Francis Adams, Jr. was faced with the pressure of living up to his famous forbearers, and it showed. The pressure is apparent throughout his Autobiography which he wrote in 1913 for the Massachusetts Historical Society of which he had long served as president. The autobiography was published in 1916 following Adams' death together with a lengthy Memorial Address delivered by Henry Cabot Lodge.

Although it has fallen into obscurity, perhaps due to the inevitable comparison with his brother's great book, Charles Adams' Autobiography is worth knowing. Adams tries honestly to reflect on his own life. In part, Adams appears as the curmudgeonly class-conscious son of privilege portrayed in Richard White's study of the transcontinentals, but Adams is more. Adams reflects on his shortcomings as well as on his undoubted achievements and offers what he sees to be the sense of and result of his long life. Discussing the high accomplishments and Puritanical, driven characters of his two presidential ancestors and of his father, Adams concludes that he got more pleasure and enjoyment from life than did his forbearers. He concludes a lengthy discussion of this matter: "In other directions also, I have perhaps, accomplished nothing considerable, compared with what my three immediate ancestors accomplished; but on the other hand, I have done some things better than they ever did; and, what is more and most of all, I have had a much better time in life -- got more enjoyment out of it. In this respect I woould not change with any of them."

Adams' Autobiography has many of the components of a modern coming of age story as the author reflects throughout on what he wanted to do with his life and on his search for a calling. The book is in five chapters which describe, respectively, Adams early years and education through Harvard, his legal career and his observations of politics following the election of Lincoln, Adams' experiences in Washington, D.C. in 1861 before his father became Ambassador to Britain, Adams' Civil War experiences, in which he rose to the rank of Colonel, and finally, his lengthy and varied life following the Civil War. Each of these chapters are highly interesting and have a great deal to say about Adams and his era. It is valuable to hear Adams discuss his father who, when Adams was a child, took him fishing for one day while begrudging the time because it took him away from matters of importance. Adams discusses his unsuccessful legal career in which he labored for some years in a profession for which he was unsuited and which he hated. Adams discusses Civil War Washington and his reactions to people he knew including William Seward, Charles Sumner, and Andrew Johnson.

The Civil War and Harvard were the formative influences on Adams' life. The central portions of the Autobiography describe Adams' decision to enlist while most of the rest of his family was in Britain. The War, Adams writes, helped give him a sense of purpose. It gave him a sense of independence and comradeship and of nature all of which he lacked in his upbringing. Subsequent experiences and reading taught Adams about Darwinism and severely modified his Puritanism and religious beliefs. These experiences also taught him about his calling as a historian and as a writer.

Adams became a successful businessman in his work as a railroad executive and in other endeavors. He lived, as he acknowledged, as busy and varied life in which he combined his business interests with his scholarly interests. He felt, with some justification, that he had spread himself too thin. The Autobiography expresses his wish to earn a vast sum of money in business and then leave it to Harvard to encourage the growth of education and wisdom,

Unfortunately, the Autobiography has long been out of print. I am reading a copy of the 1916 edition and I can't vouch of the accuracy of the offprint which I am reviewing. It is worth knowing about Charles Francis Adams' Autobiography and the insights it offers into himself and into the Civil War Era and Gilded Age. The book will be of most value to readers with a serious interest in these periods of American history.

Charles Francis Adams
By Bomojaz
Charles Francis Adams is best remembered as the ambassador to England during the Civil War who helped keep England (and France) from recognizing the Confederacy. His father was John Quincy Adams. He was a Boston Whig very much opposed to slavery, though like Lincoln, he was willing to concede smaller issues to protect the larger ones (mainly the spread of slavery to incoming states). Adams was an austere man; it was said that when he entered a stuffy room, the temperature dropped 10 degrees. The most interesting events dealt with in this biography, written by his son, include:

the 1848 Presidential election, where Adams had presided over the Buffalo Convention which formed the Free Soil Party and saw the nomination of Martin Van Buren as President and himself as Vice-President;

the war with Mexico, a war Adams thought unjust and only an excuse for slave states to gain new territory;

the Trent Affair in 1861, when two Confederate commissioners were arrested aboard the "Trent" on their way to England, which almost caused war with that country; and

the launching of the "Alabama" in Liverpool, a British privateer that Adams tried but failed to prevent from sailing, and then held the British government responsible for for the destruction of American property caused by the ship.

Adams, Jr., tells his father's story in a robust, very readable style. It's informative and authoritative, and even after 100 years has the feel of definitiveness about it. Highly recommended.

  • About The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper
The Last of the Mohicans: A Narrative of 1757 (1826) is a historical novel by James Fenimore Cooper. It is the second book of the Leatherstocking Tales pentalogy and the best known to contemporary audiences. The Pathfinder, published 14 years later in 1840, is its sequel. The Last of the Mohicans is set in 1757, during the French and Indian War (the Seven Years' War), when France and Great Britain battled for control of North America. During this war, both the French and the British used Native American allies, but the French were particularly dependent, as they were outnumbered in the Northeast frontier areas by the more numerous British colonists. The novel is primarily set in the upper New York wilderness, detailing the transport of the two daughters of Colonel Munro, Alice and Cora, to a safe destination at Fort William Henry. Among the caravan guarding the women are the frontiersman Natty Bumppo, the Major Duncan Heyward, and the Indians Chingachgook and Uncas, the former of whom is the novel's title character. These characters are sometimes seen as a microcosm of the budding American society, particularly with regards to their racial composition.

    Review
This novel remains the most popular of Cooper's 'Leatherstocking Tales', a classic story of the French and Indian War. The battles and exciting pursuits, which constitute the book's plot, are rounded out by interesting Indian lore and descriptions of the wilderness. --Masterpieces of World Literature

The beauty of the unspoiled wilderness and sorrow at its disappearance, symbolized in Hawkeye's Mohican Indian friend, the last of their tribe, are important themes of the novel. --Merriam Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature

[Cooper's] worldwide fame attests his power of invention, for his novels have been popular principally for their variety of dramatic incidents. . . but. . . [there has been] a revival of interest in their creation of tension between different kinds of society. . . between civil law and natural rights as these suggest issues of moral and mythic import. --The Concise Oxford Companion to American Literature

[Cooper's] sympathy is large, and his humor is as genuine--and as perfectly unaffected--as his art. --Joseph Conrad

"I think these World's Classics editions are really fine. The notes are meaningful and very useful to students, yet the way they are indicated in the text is not intrusive. Great job!."--Grace Epstein, Stephens College

"[An] excellent inexpensive paperback edition. Much better quality than equivilant volumes. The explanatory notes are a valuable addition."--Jeff Cupp, Troy State University

"'Historical Contexts' concise yet thorough. Apparatus generally very satisfying in its relevance and thoroughness."--Fred R. McFadden, Coppin State College

"At last, a paperback book under $4.00! this edition is indeed a "World Classic."--Paul Putt, Lee College

"Introductory material and historical notes are helpful."--Dr. Judy L. Martin, Missouri Western State College

    An essential early American novel
    By Michael J. Mazza
James Fenimore Cooper's novel "The Last of the Mohicans" (subtitled "A Narrative of 1757"), is a remarkable book for many reasons. First published in 1826, the book represents an early attempt to create substantial literary art from the material of North American history and geography. Although the book has its flaws, it is for the most part a success.
In the novel, the white woodsman Hawk-eye and his Mohican Indian comrade Chingachgook join forces to help the daughters of a white military officer through hostile territory. The story takes place in a colonial American setting marked by conflict between French and English forces -- a conflict that also involves various Indian nations.
There are a number of exciting (and often graphically violent) scenes of battle and chase. Hawk-eye, a white man who, to a large degree, rejects European-American values, is a fascinating figure -- indeed, he is one of the most enduring fictional creations in all of United States literature. Through the mouths of Hawk-eye and the various Indian characters, Cooper offers some intriguing criticisms of white culture.
As I said, the book is not without flaws. The momentum of the book lags for a brief stretch, and some of Cooper's characters (in particular, his women) at times sound a bit stereotypical. But the overall power and intelligence of Cooper's work is undeniable. Particularly impressive is his re-creation of a multilingual world of complex cultural and personal conflict. Also noteworthy is his evocation of the American landscape. A tale of death and survival, of betrayal and loyalty, and, above all, of the extraordinary bond between a white man and an Indian, "The Last of the Mohicans" is one classic that deserves to be read and reevaluated by each generation.

    Voice of the Wilderness
    By Peter Reeve
Like the Star Wars movies, Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales were written out of sequence. In their chronological order, with their order of publication in parentheses, they are: The Deerslayer (5), The Last of the Mohicans (2), The Pathfinder (4), The Pioneers (1) and The Prairie (3). So if you want to read them in either chronological or published order, you should read Mohicans second. But each novel is self-contained, so if you want to try just one, to decide if the rest are worth reading, then Mohicans is the one to start with, as it is his most famous work and generally acknowledged to be his best.

The hero of these tales, the improbably named Nathaniel Bumppo (or Natty, or Deerslayer, or Hawkeye, or The Long Rifle, or...etc, etc) was the first, and remains the quintessential, all-American fictional hero; brave, noble, honest and more at home in the wilderness than the town. He is not however, the strong, silent type. He has a habit of launching into long, rambling streams of homespun philosophy at the drop of a coonskin cap. Never mind that lead shot is flying thick and fast around his ears, he will lean on his rifle and expound on the different natures of Indians and whites, or the evils of literacy.

The plot of Mohicans is action-packed, but is linear - no surprise twists, and no sub-plots - and contains some highly improbable elements. Well, would you be fooled by an enemy disguised as a beaver? Michael Mann's excellent 1992 screen version reworked the plot extensively, to its advantage.

Cooper was the first distinctively American novelist and was inspired by Walter Scott, the inventor of the historical novel. He was consciously attempting to emulate Scott but, although he writes quite well, he lacks Scott's lyricism. And his characters, specially the women, are resiliently two-dimensional. But he did capture the spirit of the frontier, the pride and pain of a new and growing country, and in doing so created myths out of America's past that have survived, evolved, and have sustained the nation, ever since.

    a piece of history
    By Kayo Smada
I thought that this was an excellent study of the European-Indian relationships and intertribal relationships among the Americam Indians. There are some gruesome scenes; I feel it is probably a fairly accurate account of practices at that time amongst those tribes. At times the narrative gets wordy because of the details of the history and traditions. I can't believe this book was taught in the 5-8 grades in this country 30 years ago. I don't think the majority of 12th graders could read this book with ease.

  • About A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
A Little Princess is a British children's novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, first published as a book in 1905. It is an expanded version of Burnett's 1888 short story entitled Sara Crewe: or, What Happened at Miss Minchin's, which was serialized in St. Nicholas Magazine from 1887 to 1888. According to Burnett, after she composed the 1902 play based on the story, her publisher asked that she expand the story as a novel with "the things and people that had been left out before". It was published by Charles Scribner's Sons with illustrations by Ethel Franklin Betts and the full title A Little Princess: Being the Whole Story of Sara Crewe Now Being Told for the First Time. Based on a 2007 online poll, the U.S. National Education Association named the book one of its "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children". In 2012 it was ranked number 56 among all-time children's novels in a survey published by School Library Journal, a monthly with primarily U.S. audience.

    From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8-The perennial fascination with Frances Hodgeson Burnett's classic story has made it a vehicle for a variety of adaptations. This audio presentation by the Saint Charles Players is an unsuccessful attempt to make the story into a radio-style version. The best work is done by the narrator who weaves story text between dialogue that is sometimes flat and sometimes overacted. Sound effects are helpful and the musical interludes pleasant, but overall this offering lacks dramatic intensity. The tapes must be played on a stereo player or part of the story can't be heard. A better choice for listeners who want to listen to the entire story would be the unabridged reading by Flo Gibson for Recorded Books (1987).

    From Booklist
Ages 5-7. Not just abridged but retold, this colorfully illustrated, large-format book has a text that's longer than most picture books but considerably shorter than Burnett's beloved novel. McClintock's sensitive illustrations, apparently ink drawings with watercolor washes, will certainly appeal to readers and book buyers of all ages. The period settings and costumes have a charm all their own, and the detailed pictures clearly portray Sara's transformation from privileged child to pauper and back again. Some scenes and dialogue here did not appear in the original book, but they serve to move the plot along more swiftly. The story loses a great deal of subtlety in theme and character development (as well as plot and setting) in its adaptation to picture-book format. Those who love the original will advise children to wait until they're old enough to read it. But children or parents who want a picture-book version will find this a very pretty one. Carolyn Phelan

"What little girl would not be delighted to discover that a beloved adult believes she shares Sara Crewe's wonderful imagination, wit, and courage when she receives a tape of The Little Princess?" -- Book Links, November 1997

Enjoy a complete, unabridged classic spiced by the voice of film actress Wanda McCaddon as it narrates the classic story of young rich girl Sara Crewe, who finds herself impoverished and at the mercy of a cruel headmistress when her father dies. Enjoy a strong audio version which recreates the drama of the story. -- Midwest Book Review

    Very abridged
    By Xyz
As noted in the product description, this is a shortened version of the classic story, written for new readers. There is nothing wrong with it, except that a lot of the magic of the original is in the details, which are rather left out here. A somewhat regretted purchase, because the classic version proved to be almost as easy to read, for a child who loves the discovery of reading, and much more interesting. Larger print is nice. There are no pictures in the paperback copy.

    A book for all ages
    By Kindle Customer
Though marketed as a children's book, I have greatly enjoyed reading it many times over the course of my life. I first heard the tale as it was read to me by my grandmother as a toddler and have returned to it time and again over the years.Like The Little Prince, it is a book for all ages and points in life and reminds the reader to stay true to yourself and beliefs no matter the circumstances and that no mater class or condition, people are all important.

One of my favorite books ever!
    By Bibliophile
Every young person needs to be read The Little Princess at least once in their childhood! This is a classic to be reread and shared. Sara is a true heroine worthy of emulation. Please don't pass this one up!
I already owned a copy but bought this one as I'm a sucker for a beautiful cover. My 15 year old grabbed it as soon as it arrived and read it for herself even though it's been read to her at least twice. She devoured it and declared it much better than the movie.

Steamy, fun, and easy to connect with.
    By Sarah Doebereiner
I enjoyed this book immensely. The sexual tension builds organically throughout and propels the story forward. I found myself rooting for the couple. There is an expert balance between the passionate moments and the emotional connection forming between Jackson and Lindsay. Jackson as a character is refreshingly respectful and tender. He knows how to treat a woman with care and restraint, and he also knows when to get a little dirty. I think anyone could identify with Lindsay and her exciting vacation adventure. I would recommend this book for people who enjoy romance built on an emotional foundation. It’s an erotic fling, but there is a deep connection between the two that transcends the solely physical aspect. I can’t wait to see what happens next with these characters.

There's a story there but then...
    By Jullie
This is the second in the series. The first I was a bit frustrated at the end. Left with unanswered questions. I wanted to try the second to see if it finishes off the first. It does not. It is its own story however once again, cliffhanger. I don't think I'll try again. It's to frustrating. Too many unanswered questions. Could be a good story but there's not a lot of depth to the male role.

The Cowboy and the Vampire: The Last Sunset (The Cowboy and the Vampire Collection Book 4), by Clark Hays, Kathleen McFall

Take one long, last look at LonePine, Wyoming, population 438. It's been two years since the vampires quit the quirky little town and things are mostly back to normal -- broken dreams and never enough whiskey. But that's about to go to hell.

Hold on tight for a midnight showdown when a psychotic religious order takes the entire town hostage -- including Tucker's long-lost brother -- to lure Lizzie from her frozen exile in Russia. The mad monks know Lizzie's murder will strand the ruling vampire elite in a disembodied afterlife so the cult can impose their twisted beliefs on the living and undead alike. It's a rip-roarin' stampede as a cowboy and a vampire try to round up the shattered pieces of their unusual romance.

With the fate of the world on the line yet again, can Tucker and Lizzie put aside their broken hearts to face one last sunset together?

Slap leather or reach for the sky.

The Cowboy and the Vampire: The Last Sunset is the fourth book in The Cowboy and the Vampire Collection, a series called everything from cult classic to trailblazer in a new genre: Western Gothic.

    Review
The Last Sunset brings a close to the tale of Lizzie,Tucker and the rest of the gang with a finale that will leave you covered in blood and begging for more. It's sexy, it's funny, it's scary and it will get your heart jumping like a pickup truck on an old county road. - East Oregonian

The writing team of Hays and McFall keeps getting better and better...provocatively sensual, and even existential, this novel maintains the series' reputation as a thrilling page-turner that will satiate its readers' desire for compelling action conveyed through a saga of undying love. The stakes are higher than ever in the latest chapter of this outstandingly entertaining vampire series. - Kirkus Reviews

A rollicking ride, passionate, powerfully compelling. As blood flows and bullets fly, immortality and love are put to the test. Fans of Westerns, Gothics, romance and thrillers alike will find a gripping story line that's unpredictable and hard to put down. Hays and McFall do such a fine job of integrating setting, characters, and past events into the bigger finale's picture that even those with no prior familiarity with the series will find it easy to become thoroughly engrossed in this last episode. - D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

Reviews for The Cowboy and the Vampire Collection

    Deliciously dark, witty. - Booklist

A Zany Grey Romance! As a vampire novel, The Cowboy and the Vampire is sure to satisfy Dracula fans' expectations. However, this book has a little something extra to offer readers. A little something that harkens back to the days when man fought against the wild in the name of civilization. Hays and McFall have succeeded in mixing the Western genre tropes with the Gothic conventions to create a zany grey romance. - Writastic Thoughts from the Thinking Realm

Definitely not your ordinary cowboys and vampires! The authors have managed to blend traditional cowboy clichés with a truly gothic, yet modern, vampire atmosphere. The authors are extremely gifted writers; the dialogue is brilliant. - Fresh Fiction

One of the weirdest stories I have ever read. It's right up there with Neil Gaiman's man-swallowing woman parts and talking tents. Instead, here we have rocket-launching, womb-sucking, Bible-bending, non-pointy-toothed vampires. And love. And cowboys. If I had to liken this book to a movie, it would either be to Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, or maybe more appropriately, Quentin Tarantino's From Dusk to Dawn. - The Avid Reader

The Cowboy and the Vampire is one of the funniest and most engaging books I have read in a long time. Jam-packed with adventure, vampires, true love, and a cast of characters you will not soon forget, you find yourself turning the pages thinking, "What more could possibly happen to these two?" And then, you find out. I never imagined the melding of a contemporary western and a paranormal romance could be so seamless or so much fun. - Bitten by Books

Go ahead. You're trying not to laugh at the title. Let it out! It's funny and so is the book. Get a few pages into The Cowboy And The Vampire and you'll be laughing with them, not at them. This book is the story John Carpenter's Vampires tried to be and failed so miserably. Here are your contemporary vampires and vampire hunters, fighting it out in the wild and woolly West. Hays and McFall have taken a grave situation and made it more than the standard vampire-worship tale. There is grief, loss, and pain on a human and inhuman scale, but there is so much more. The humor in The Cowboy And The Vampire is far from the slapstick of previous creations; the wit, sly and adult. - SF Site Featured Review - Lisa DuMond

    From the Author
An interview with authors Clark Hays and Kathleen McFall (excerpted from multiple articles/blog posts)

    1. You write in a relatively unknown genre you call Western Gothic. What is it?
Western Gothic is a style of fiction that transplants the moody, death-obsessed themes of classic gothic fiction (think Castle of Otranto or, of course,Dracula) to the wide open, inspiring vistas of the modern west (Riders of the Purple Sage or All the Pretty Horses).

Western Gothic exists in the negative space between dark and light. Gothic fiction uses the darkness--the creepy atmosphere, curious, obsessive behavior and morbid thoughts--to focus on the light, providing the perfect backdrop to illuminate the best in people: the desire to overcome death, to hope and to love.Westerns, ironically, use the light to set off the dark, weaving stories of good men pushed to the limits by the cruelty and avarice of others (usually tyrannical land owners) or the blind apathy of nature. Western Gothic lives in the borderlands between the two worlds, a forever twilight of gray nights and last sunsets. To put it in contemporary terms, it's Longmire meets Preacher.

We suspect we may have unintentionally invented the genre with The Cowboy and the Vampire Collection, a series of four books set in the modern rural west and featuring sexy, brooding vampires bent on world domination. Since the first book's publication in 1999, we're happy to see a few others trying out the genre.

    2. Why did you choose Western Gothic and when did you first start writing in the genre?
We love writing in the Western Gothic genre because we get to explore huge, archetypal themes about human consciousness, love and death, AND we get to move our characters across stunning natural landscapes with deconstructed shootouts and heart-pounding action. Add in the quirky humor natural to small towns and along-suffering cowdog with the soul of a poet--and some pretty steamy undead erotica--and we hope it makes for an unforgettable reading experience.

We wrote the first book--A Very Unusual Romance--in 1999. Our fourth and final book in the series, The Last Sunset, hit the shelves on June 9,2016. (Yes, we know, we are slow writers.) All the books in this series explore the tension and connection between opposites: life and death; mortality and immortality; love and lust; urban and rural; thought and action; strength and decay; good and evil; and country music and whiskey.

    3. How is this genre different from "Weird West?"
Weird Westerns transplant occult elements to the Old West--the genre has existed for decades, and is most often associated with the golden age of pulp paperbacks. Weird Westerns reached their apogee (in our opinion) with the cool and spooky Jonah Hex comics of the 70s. Western Steampunk is a more recent energetic offspring and heir to the crown.

    4. Why specifically did you choose to write about cowboys and vampires?
The draw for us, as writers, was the many angles offered in these two archetypes, allowing us to dig down into the bedrock of an "opposites attract"romantic storyline. Tucker is a hard-luck cowboy from tiny LonePine, Wyoming, just trying to scrape together enough cash to keep himself in whiskey and keep his overly sensitive dog Rex in kibble. Lizzie is a reporter from New York with a short fuse, a growing reputation as a rising star in the world of feature journalism and a shocking and ancient undead secret in her blood. The series follows their relationship as they try to navigate an unlikely romance while fending off threats--both physical and existential--from the vampire and human world. At heart, the series excavates the question: How much is too much to sacrifice for love?

Of course, that sounds like the set up, maybe with different clothes, for any"cultures clash" romance, but we super-charged it with paranormal and occult elements that claw past the expected to an even deeper level: the unconscious. By crashing together two tried and true archetypes, cowboys and vampires, we explored the tension pre-loaded into these cultural heavyweights. Cowboys are stoic and laconic and hard working, forever standing up for the little guy and what's right. Vampires are the epitome of decadence and decay, cunning and prone to hyperbole and forever eating the little guy and perverting what's right. It's a rich, juicy vein to sink our literary teeth into.

    5. How do your characters develop over the series?
Over the course of our four books, our two main characters reflect the evolving nature of their relationship, culminating in the ominously titled The Last Sunset. Still, they--and their love for each other--don't change much outside of learning what they are willing to sacrifice for each other, and trying to overcome loss and grief, together and alone.

But one character that does change significantly in the four books is the bloodthirsty and delightfully amoral Elita. Introduced early in book one (she has the first line in the prologue), she quickly became a fan favorite due to her wit, fashion sense and hedonistic proclivities--think Dorothy Parker meets undead Betty Page. She tried to murder Tucker, twice, almost ate his dog Rex, and left Lizzie to waste away in the streets of New York. But by the end of the series in book four, she's become a champion for equal undead rights (there's a vampire civil war throughout) and Lizzie's best (only?) friend, experiencing a level of empathy--out of love and grief--disproportionate to her long existence. Of course, her compassion is expressed in true vampire manner: sex and violence.

    6. You are a married couple writing together. Tell us about your writing process. Is it smooth?
We fight a lot. About big important things, like plotting and characters, and less weighty issues, like one of us using too many commas (we won't say who). But we love how writing together keeps our relationship vibrant and we encourage people to consider this as a means of becoming closer with your partner. It doesn't have to be for publication purposes, it can just be a sweet exercise in sharing. (Try writing haiku together; that's how we got started.)

And of course, the opposites attract story line appeals because it mimics our own relationship: a lapsed cowboy (Clark) and a very urban writer(Kathleen). Tucker and Lizzie became proxies to explore the powerful currents, shadows and joyful corners of our hopelessly stormy relationship.

    7. How does geography influence your books?
Our books are set in fictional LonePine, Wyoming, population 438. It's based on an amalgam of our favorite small towns:

First and foremost--Whitehall, Montana, where Clark grew up. It was about 20 miles from his family ranch, and seemed like a bustling place from that childish perspective. It wasn't. Favorite memory: eating corndogs at the A&W and visiting the feed store (memorialized in The Last Sunset).

Next--Big Piney, Wyoming, an even smaller town where Clark's dad worked for many years. Favorite memory: the Radio Shack mall, memorialized in Blood and Whiskey, and also donuts.

Another small town we love is Plush, Oregon. It might be the smallest of all, but we had a wonderful time there mining for sunstones, Oregon's state gemstone. The sunstones play a pivotal part in our books.

Last but not least are the countless small towns we've visited on road trips through the west: Fossil, Frenchglen, Shaniko, Cougar and Madras. That last town is deathly important to The Cowboy and the Vampire Collection, because it was at a truckstop there where we tried to overcome a two-year separation and bring our hearts and minds together for a lifelong creative writing partnership. We sat in a booth chain smoking (which is very bad for you; we've since stopped) and drinking truckstop coffee (which also may be bad for you) while sketching out the plot for A Very Unusual Romance on a paper placemat, in crayon. We used a lot of black and red.

    About the Author
Between the two of them, Clark Hays and Kathleen McFall have worked in writing jobs ranging from cowboy-poet to energy journalist to restaurant reviewer to university press officer. After they met, their writing career took center stage when they wrote the first book in The Cowboy and the Vampire Collection as a test for marriage. They passed. Clark and Kathleen now live in Portland, Oregon.

Great end to a great series
    By Deborah
Gothic vampire western romance with humour..
This is a fantastic and slightly off-beat series and I'm sad this is the last one and we're saying goodbye to these guys, it's been an interesting and funny ride with some totally unforgettable characters.
Tucker (the last cowboy) met and fell in love with Lizzie, a reporter from New York, Tucker lives in the small town of LonePine population 438.
“Holy crap, you cannot even call that piece of s*** a town,”
He has a brilliant and loyal companion in Rex.
"You’d make someone a hell of a guard dog,” he said to Rex. “Not me, obviously, but someone.”
It turns out Lizzie is special in ways she never imagined, she's turned against her will into a vampire but not just any everyday or should that be everynight vampire no she's their queen because apparently she can turn full humans into vampires, which makes her unbelievably valuable to some and a threat to others.
Lizzie's life is under threat and it keeps Tucker, his friend Lenny
“This guy Lenny is absolutely bat-s*** crazy,”
    And vampires Elita and Rurik
    "Elita, never a pleasure,”
Rurik said. “If I’d known you were flying in tonight, I would have invested in more surface-to-air missiles.”
    "Such a charmer,” Elita said.
Busy trying to save and protect her.
At the end of the previous book 'Rough Trails' Lizzie leaves Tucker and LonePine breaking both their hearts in the process, she holes up in Russia trying to be the queen everyone expects, her decisions aren't always popular but she stands firm.
Tucker has less to occupy him and he can't get over his one true love it doesn't help that he's in a town surrounded my memories of her and that's why I personally struggled a bit with the start of this book because I'm a hopeless romantic and I like these two together not apart. In the previous books it's been Tucker and Lizzie against the world, if they weren't together then they were fighting to be and that's what made this difficult because they're both miserable although Lizzie is hiding her pain by sleeping with half the vampire nation.
Now I'm not saying the start of this book isn't good because it is, Lizzie has pushed some of the vampires too far and they're after her death and they've found a way to get her where she's the weakest, in the Meta.
The psychotic religious order takes up residence in LonePine and manages to get their hands on Tuckers brother Travis which means Tucker is not only trying to save Lizzie but rescue Travis as well, the amazing and resourceful Lenny is there to help of course along with Rex and the vampires Elita and Rurik.
It's all hands on deck as things get way out of control and this turns out to be the perfect end to this series, I'm so glad I re-read the previous ones first it's reminded me of just how totally fabulous and entertaining this series is.
I also have to say that I don't give 5* often or easily so when I do it's been earned, in my opinion anyway.

I was kindly given an ARC by the authors.

Riding off into the sunset as only a cowboy and vampire can!
    By William Stone
LonePine, Wyoming has been relatively peaceful in the last two years since vampires have left the town alone. Struggling with her responsibilities as queen of the vampires, Lizzie decided it would be best to head to Russia leaving poor Tucker behind. Both are miserable, but they continue forward as separate individuals living in separate worlds determined to keep it that way. However, the peacefulness of LonePine and the world of vampires are about to get shaken up and brought together again.
The Last Sunset focuses on the continued relationship, or what's left of it, of Tucker and Lizzie as they find themselves together once again dealing with another threat. Lizzie needs the help of Tucker's brother to figure out why some vampires are going to sleep in the morning and not waking up again at night, so she sets out for LonePine once again. Unfortunately, Lizzies arrival sets off a series of events that may put the entire town of LonePine at risk when it turns out that a new cult in town is connected to the issues plaguing the vampires.

Much like the previous books, Tucker and Lizzie find themselves in a fight for their lives, but this book has a different feel to it than the previous ones. I'm sure a lot of it is the result of the deteriorated relationship between Tucker and Lizzie. There is a lot of pain and hurt that has occurred between the two of them, so I wasn't surprised at the difference. However, I found myself yearning for them to put aside their pain and remember what brought them together in the first place from the moment they first come together in the book. It was kind of hard to see them at each other's throats even if it was understandable.

I enjoyed the action in the book quite a bit too. I wondered if this book would kick off with the craziness like in the previous books, and I was not disappointed. Look at it this way: if the title the Cowboy and the Vampire wasn't enough to make the book sound interesting, add in the fact that a religious death cult goes up against said cowboy and vampire and now you have something really interesting! But what makes the book even better is the return of my two favorite characters: Rex, Tucker's loyal canine companion, and Lenny, Tucker's loyal, conspiracy-theorist friend. If you want to know why they continue to be my favorites, you have to read the book!

I'm easily giving this book five stars, and I highly recommend it to anyone! If you've read the previous three books, you will not be disappointed in this one. It provides some nice closure to the events of the previous book, which I think we all needed. I was so shaken up by the ended of book three that I couldn't wait to see how things turned out in book four. I'm happy to finally have the chance to find out.

    Leaving Wyoming -- and downcast.
    By D. Vaughn
There are places in this country that take away the breath, the outback of Wyoming is one of these places and in this final book of a fascinating 4 book series the mountains and general landscape are described with a flavor that far outstrips a tourist ad, clearly the authors of this book have a love affair with Wyoming and put their love into Lone Pine, the fictional, small, out-of-the-way town where the action in this rich book centers.
The cowboy, Tucker, making his way with his jack-of-all-trades grizzled friend Lenny in the spectacular natural setting of Lone Pine, Wyoming, the action scenes pitting vampires against the hard men of Lone Pine, for a chance to make the world safe for all of us, combines the best of both action and personal intimate involvement. Few books provide this impassioned fusion, The Last Sunset tops off a memorable series.
When you invest yourself, get caught up with the characters, settings and action in a compelling book, which is followed by three more books with the same environment and know that this is the last one, there is a letdown, a big one. That’s where I am now, and have been for several weeks, living with the fact that, “The Last Sunset” is just that, the final book of the marvelous, “Cowboy and the Vampire” series.
I found myself reading slower and slower as the end of the book approached reluctant to let go of the dozen or so players, human and vampire, in this tip top book. No more vampires and their interactions with humans, their daily return from the dead as night falls and the final resolution. End of the series, end of life.
