The House of Mirth (1905), by Edith Wharton, is the story of Lily Bart, a well-born, but penniless woman of the high society of New York City, who was raised and educated to become wife to a rich man, a hothouse flower for conspicuous consumption. As an unmarried woman with gambling debts and an uncertain future, Lily is destroyed by the society who created her. Written in the style of a novel of manners, The House of Mirth was the fourth novel by Edith Wharton (1862–1937), which tells the story of Lily Bart against the background of the high-society of upper class New York City of the 1890s; as a genre novel, The House of Mirth (1905) is an example of American literary naturalism.

"The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth," warns Ecclesiastes 7:4, and so does the novel by Edith Wharton that takes its title from this call to heed. New York at the turn of the century was a time of opulence and frivolity for those who could afford it. But for those who couldn't and yet wanted desperately to keep up with the whirlwind, like Wharton's charming Lily Bart, it was something else altogether: a gilded cage rather than the Gilded Age.

One of Wharton's earliest descriptions of her heroine, in the library of her bachelor friend and sometime suitor Lawrence Selden, indicates that she appears "as though she were a captured dryad subdued to the conventions of the drawing room." Indeed, herein lies Lily's problem. She has, we're told, "been brought up to be ornamental," and yet her spirit is larger than what this ancillary role requires. By today's standards she would be nothing more than a mild rebel, but in the era into which Wharton drops her unmercifully, this tiny spark of character, combined with numerous assaults by vicious society women and bad luck, ultimately renders Lily persona non grata. Her own ambivalence about her position serves to open the door to disaster: several times she is on the verge of "good" marriage and squanders it at the last moment, unwilling to play by the rules of a society that produces, as she calls them, "poor, miserable, marriageable girls.

Lily's rather violent tumble down the social ladder provides a thumbnail sketch of the general injustices of the upper classes (which, incidentally, Wharton never quite manages to condemn entirely, clearly believing that such life is cruel but without alternative). From her start as a beautiful woman at the height of her powers to her sad finale as a recently fired milliner's assistant addicted to sleeping drugs, Lily Bart is heroic, not least for her final admission of her own role in her downfall. "Once--twice--you gave me the chance to escape from my life and I refused it: refused it because I was a coward," she tells Selden as the book draws to a close. All manner of hideous socialite beasts--some of whose treatment by Wharton, such as the token social-climbing Jew, Simon Rosedale, date the book unfortunately--wander through the novel while Lily plummets. As her tale winds down to nothing more than the remnants of social grace and cold hard cash, it's hard not to agree with Lily's own assessment of herself: "I have tried hard--but life is difficult, and I am a very useless person. I can hardly be said to have an independent existence. I was just a screw or a cog in the great machine I called life, and when I dropped out of it I found I was of no use anywhere else." Nevertheless, it's even harder not to believe that she deserved better, which is why The House of Mirth remains so timely and so vital in spite of its crushing end and its unflattering portrait of what life offers up. --Melanie Rehak

Wharton's account of the ill-fated life of Lily Bart receives a perfunctory treatment in this audio program. It is New York in the early 20th century; Lily loves Lawrence Selden, but he sees her as a fortune hunter, with tragic consequences. The author excels at delineating the ways money, romance, and social standing intertwine in the society of the time. Included is a lengthy introduction by Wharton biographer R.W.B. Lewis that sets the work in the context of the writer's life and career. Casual listeners may consider the preface too long and scholarly, and those coming to the novel for the first time may be put off by learning the outcome and by hearing Lewis's uncertainty about whether it is a masterpiece. Anna Fields handles the narration adequately but strains to create masculine voices and makes most of the women too flighty. As a result, the characters seem more trivial than Wharton intended. Edith Wharton was brilliant

House of Mirth, by Edith Wharton, was a fantastic read. From the moment I read the first sentence to the very last page, I was captivated by Lily Bart' s life. At first, Wharton' s writing style reminded me of one of my favorite authors, Jane Austen. I have been a long time fan of Austen' s, so to equate another author to her is a great praise in my eyes. N ow that I've finished the novel, I believe Wharton is in a category all her own. She is refreshing to read and has a great balance between dialogue and text. Although I liked Lily from the very beginning, I absolutely loved her by the end. There were times when her story was endearing, and other times when it was completely heartbreaking. In both instances, Wharton draws the reader into Lily' s life.
While this is not my usual cup of tea, I greatly enjoyed reading it, and suggest it to anyone who loves a thought-provoking story.

I read this for my book club and I did enjoy the story but I don't care for Edith Wharton's style of writing as she is too detailed and describes the flowers and gardens and what someone is wearing in detail and it is just my taste. The book I got from the library was old and the print was very small and the contractions such as "couldn't" had a space and would appear as could n 't and it made it even more difficult to read. Once I got my Kindle version I actually was able to read the book faster and did finish it which I doubt that I would have done if I had stuck to the library book. he other thing I didn't like about the book was that it was difficult to keep characters straight because sometimes they were referred to by their first names, sometimes by their first and last names, sometimes by Miss, Mrs., or Mr. and last name and then sometimes the women who were married were referred to as Mrs., their husband's first and last name such as Mrs. John Doe.

Old New York's pomp viewed with a sharp discerning eye

Written in 1905, this novel brought me into the world of New York society at that time. Edith Wharton lived in this world and her writing dissected its pomp with a sharp discerning eye. The people she writes about own country houses where the party never stops. They travel abroad for months at a time. Their clothes are of the finest quality. And the only possible career for a woman is to marry a rich man.

We first meet Lily Bart at the age of 29. She has been trained from childhood in all the social graces. Unfortunately for her though, her father lost all his money when she was 12 years old and both her parents died soon after that. As she was beautiful, she assumed that her looks, quick wit and personality would attract a wealthy husband, and, indeed she did attract them. But in her youth she turned down several suitors and was now aware that time was no longer on her side; she needed to marry before she lost her looks.

She has her eyes set on Percy Gryce, a dull man who will be at a party in a country home and she flirts in such a way that he is soon smitten. He is desirable for his money but he bores her to death. But this romance never works out.

There is another man of course. His name is Lawrence Selden. He is a lawyer and lives a nice life but doesn't have the wealth she thinks she requires. They become friends and it is clear to the reader that they are in love. She still keeps looking for a wealthy man though and makes one mistake after another. Even though she remains chaste, she gets into some compromising situations. There is a lot of gossip and her rich women friends either turn on her or drop her.

Her prospects get dimmer and dimmer and she even considers marrying a rich Jewish man who she had once turned down, but even he rejects her. At one point Lawrence Selden tries to help her but she rejects him too. She's penniless and has no prospects. She is living in a boarding house and trying to work in a milliner's shop but even the spangles she sews on the hats are crooked and she soon loses that job. This novel ends in tragedy.

Lily Bart is a great character. She symbolizes the reality of New York society. She also is very human and deeply flawed and even though there were times she annoyed me tremendously, I could also sympathize with her. As a New Yorker myself, I enjoyed the setting as I am very familiar with the streets and the history. This is a really fine book.

Alexander III of Macedon, better known to the world as Alexander the Great, was one of the most powerful rulers of the ancient world. It was during the time of his father that the various Greek city-states came together under a single ruler. Dubbed the League of Corinth, it was comprised of all the regional city-states and Philip II was the sole leader of the League. He was, unfortunately, unexpectedly assassinated at his daughter's wedding, which threw the League and Macedonia into a bit of chaos...

Growing up he has always loved to learn about the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and other historical events. After graduating from the University, he began to see and explore the world. Taking trips to various regions himself, such as Egypt to discover the pyramids and famous tombs. Followed by spending months in Spain and the surrounding areas, where he still lives. This allowed him to see the worlds that he loved first hand. Fabulous!

A fabulous historical retelling of one of history's most fascinating lives. The greatest book that I have yet read of the warrior-king and conqueror, who was and is-as Basten says-the absolute embodiment of human ambition. He was a man who wanted passionately to rule the world. While we may condemn him for the deaths he caused, I admire him as a man who set out to achieve the impossible. And he did.

Best History I've Ever Read

This is by far the most well-written, informative, interesting history I have ever read on Ancient Greece or any other subject. You can learn everything you ever wanted to know about the Greeks, but you don't have to kill the excitement of the subject in the oppressive details that most history books toil over. Instead you have a good story of the dawn of our civilization.

A Masterpiece Of A Sequel

Just finished Eidolon and was just as impressed as I was with Radiance (Wraith Kings Book 1) although that first book was more of a romance and threats of a local type where this is a global "save the world" type plot.

I have to keep comparing the 2 books because it is a continuing story line but they are much different in many ways. In addition to the global nature of the threat, this is not as much of a romance as Radiance was since our pair of protagonists are already very familiar with each other (obviously) but the story while revolving around this global threat also has as a major subplot, this continuing romance and it's trials and tribulations. This emphasis on the love and romance adds depth to the main plot and without it would just be another sword and sorcery novel, but this enables it to be filled with tragedy and triumph to grab you on an emotional level.

While it has been over a year since I read Radiance, I remember it being a heartwarming story but Eidolon starts out with an extremely emotional beginning that will drive the whole book so don't plan to ease into this story, it throws you right into some emotionally wrenching stuff. I should point out you REALLY should not be reading this without having read Radiance or you will not be able to appreciate so many things in this novel including the huge impact of this beginning.

One of the things this novel will do is keep your stress level high (did for me) since the running theme for about the first half of the book seemed to be "This is a disaster" so many things are going wrong. There are a couple of other subplots that add to the story and keep the readers interest high.

Bottom Line: "Radiance" was one of the best fantasy romances of 2015 and this sequel is no less of a quality piece of work even though it seems to be more in the vein of epic fantasy in places. The romance and dedication of Ildiko and Brishen to each other is still what makes this a great book in spite of all the heroics going on around them in this plot. 5 Stars and can't wait to see where the next book takes us.

NOTE: If you have not read the novella The Brush of Black Wings you will when this is finished (if you have read it, you will want to read the last few chapters again like I did)

Amazing sequel!

This is the sequel to Radiance, so I would highly recommend reading that first before Eidolon. While you won’t be lost if you decide to read Eidolon first, you’ll be able to see the relationship between Brishen and Ildiko as it flourishes from friendship to a much deeper bond and really allows you to get in touch with the main characters on a much deeper level. While I’m not giving away spoilers, I’d likely say you shouldn’t read ahead just in case!

In Eidolon, we see just how much in love these two are between their heated kisses, loving embraces, playful banter we love so much. When Brishen, a Prince of no value, becomes a King, the thought of losing the other is heart-wrenching. While the thought doesn’t seem to c ross Brishen’s mind, Ildiko, who is very knowledgeable when it comes to politics and duty, is prepared to leave him if she must. Unable to produce an heir since Ildiko is human, she has become a target for assassination for those hungry for the throne. Their love is tested, and there is a sense of betrayal because of this for Brishen refuses to give up the wife he loves and wants to keep.

And of course there is the galla, a horde of evil released by Brishen’s mother that is feeding upon and killing the Kai. It comes down to Brishen (for a reason I will not mention as I don’t want to spoil it) and those who ally themselves with him to close the portal. Brishen does what must be done to save his people, even if it costs him his life. To do so, they must become Wraith Kings. Grace also introduces a character you might know if you’ve read A Brush of Black Wings.

The world building is phenomenal, as is the emotions that Grace evokes when you read this book. It’s full of struggles, and a roller coaster for sure. Eidolon is an amazing book and a wonderful continuation to Radiance. Not only does Grace offer an amazing story, but also quality work in both writing and quality from the front of the cover to the very last page of the book. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a Fantasy Romance. I can’t wait to see what’s in store, even if Ildiko and Brishen are not the main focus, I know Serovek and Anhuset will make an interesting and amazing pair - they always are!

Cliffhanger: Nope, but the series will continue, or maybe a spinoff

There is no secret that i fell in love with the first book. I read that book at least 8 times and before this one came out i read it again. I knew there would be tribulations in their relationship, i just didn't expect them to be from them...

Secmics has managed to release the worst evil in the world, a lot of people are dead, Brishen is now the only living royal in all of Bast-Haradis, so he has new and very not welcome responsibilities.

He knows who he is, knows where his heart is and also knows what it needs to be done but not at the cost of his happiness and his soul.

Ildiko never thought she would see her husband become the new king, so the reality that she would have to give up Brishen just crushed her soul. I loved Ildiko since the first moment i met her in the first book, i thought she was very strong and will do anything to defend her love for Brishen until eternity. I understand that some people put duty as a top priority, but this was love, and she was the one that was causing problems in their relationship.

Brishen was rightfully hurt and mad and it hurt me to see that happen. I'm not saying Brishen didn't make mistakes but i feel his were because he felt the love of his soul slipping through his fingers.

This is where the Wraith Kings make sense, where you know why they are created and what type of men need to become the Wraith Kings.

I can't wait to see Anhuset's story, this one is going to make me smile like a deranged woman...i hope :P

Lilith is a fantasy novel written by Scottish writer George MacDonald and first published in 1895. Its importance was recognized in its later revival in paperback by Ballantine Books as the fifth volume of the celebrated Ballantine Adult Fantasy series in September 1969. Lilith is considered among the darkest of MacDonald's works, and among the most profound. It is a story concerning the nature of life, death, and salvation. In the story, MacDonald mentions a cosmic sleep that heals tortured souls, preceding the salvation of all. MacDonald was a Christian universalist, believing that all will eventually be saved. However, in this story, divine punishment is not taken lightly, and salvation is hard-won.

Lilith review

An aging, short fantasy novel from the late 1800's, it is based very loosely on the Genesis legends of Adam, Eve and Lilith in the Garden of Eden, along with with Dante's journey through hell. Because of the stylized formal language, it's initially difficult to maintain interest as you read, and easy to dismiss as stilted, plodding and contrived. However, read in conjunction with information from the George MacDonald Society website, and given awhile to digest and consider the author's apparent goal, I became somewhat significantly respectful of the author's effort in tackling these themes. It may be a less than perfect piece of literature, but I came away glad to have read and learned about it, in conjunction with a book club. It can be worthwhile time spent and uniquely broadening, if as the reader you aren't pretentiously critical.

Tedium

Allegory. Not much to modern tastes, or my own. Fuzzy mystical philosophy. Not very good writing. (all the characters are always "throwing themselves down" somewhere or other-This becomes as irritating as a persistent hiccup. Tedious. Only my own work ethic kept me slogging through to the end.

This book is not for everyone, but if you find yourself longing for a mystical place that, at one time, you might have called home, you have something in common with the protagonist of this story. It is not fast paced by today's standards, but I never got bored with it. I would recommend it to the spiritually inclined.

The Best Minecraft Strategy Guide Ever Written

Once in a while a guide is released that is so profoundly helpful it smashes all preconceptions of what a tutorial should be and bursts the entire genre wide-open. This may very well be that book.

I remember, as a young man, pouring over Prima Official Strategy guides, in order to unlock the pro secrets of video-game success. Sadly, modern strategy guides, especially those about Minecraft, have lost the elegance they once had in games past. My journey to find the perfect tutorial has spanned years and possibly hundreds of books. All the while my Minecraft playing was wrought with such severe frustration. I tried to make friends with the bony guys and they'd only shoot me. The green sad men, I assumed, would make perfect pets, but they merely exploded when I attempted to tame them. Don't get me started on the days dying of hunger and evenings of hiding in earthen holes.

But, then, a glimmer of hope shined bright through the void of melancholy defeat. How Not To Die In Minecraft popped up in my Amazon search results and changed my life. I read, enlightened, like a Viking given a vision of Valhalla. The descriptions were so vivid but marked with an elegant simplicity. And just when I thought I wouldn't get a certain concept, like in the armor section, colorful diagrams brought everything together in a tight weave of meaning.

Quickly, I turned to my computer and booted up the Minecraft.EXE. My fingers tingled with excitement as I chopped down my first tree, ate my first apple, and crafted my first pickaxe. I leaped with joy upon discovery of my first diamond. While my diamond armor and weapons allowed me to destroy entire worlds, I constructed vast empires with the basic skills from that first building tutorial.

And when all was done; when my food stocks were full, when my diamond armor and weapons were plentiful, when the enemies were dead, when the Ender Dragon was vanquished, and when I sat on a throne that overlooked my vast empire; I wept, for there were no worlds left to conquer.

Truly, this is the best Minecraft Strategy guide ever written.

Riveting. Best minecraft guide I've ever read. Detailed and gloriously succinct--William only gives us the good stuff. William, sir, I am in awe of not only your writing skills but also your boundless MInecraft knowledge. I will read every thing Mr. Eidson ever writes.

I purchased this book the day it released but I procrastinated reading it for so long because I love CM Owens' Sterling Shores series and I knew this book was a completely different type of romance novel. I had seen the trailer for the book on the author's facebook page and thought it looked good and I thought I had kind of figured out what the book was about, but I was totally and completely wrong. This is a standalone romance that has some dark and deep emotional triggers. It focuses on Chase and Mika. Who were childhood sweethearts, until life and family and stupid mistakes split them apart. This is a 2nd chance love story that might upset or evoke unwanted memories in some readers. With that being said, I LOVED it. The book was well written and was equally well researched. The characters immediately drew me in and kept me fighting for them to make it. Once I picked this book up I had a hard time putting it down and finished it in a day. Definitely would recommend it to friends.

Can I give 10 stars instead of 5??? This was one of the most beautiful books I've ever read. Mika and Chase's story is not an easy one but life isn't easy. That is why this book is so freaking amazing!!!! Go read it NOW!!!!!
