From Booklist
In this sequel to Volk’s Game (also available from Tantor and read by Hoye), Alekei “Volk” Volkovoy remains a covert military operative. Hoye’s tones of multilayered self-doubt and grief intensify as the hero must locate a Fabergé egg and find terrorists who bombed American property in Moscow. These missions force his return to bloody Chechnya—where he’d been captured, tortured, and maimed—and into the hands of his old enemy, Abreg. Hoye evokes heartfelt empathy for the anguished Volk, and for the agonizingly conflicted Abreg, too, a notable acting achievement. He skillfully reflects various Russian accents, some thickly guttural, and contrasts the subtle Russian rhythms and intonations of Volk as well as the southern-tinged American accent of a U.S. agent. The wrenchingly strong depictions of physical and emotional torture could distress some, but Hoye’s dark, brooding performance perfectly mirrors the plot. --Whitney Scott
Review
"Bronte's finest novel."
--Virginia Woolf
Review
"This edition of Villette gives readers the understanding necessary to fully enter what Kate Lawson and Lynn Shakinovsky call its 'demanding, sometimes punishing narrative mode.' Their introduction justifies and celebrates the gaps and evasions in the text as the 'heretic narrative' of a protagonist who does not always understand herself. The useful appendices—notably on women and love, women and work, and anti-Catholicism—provide the historical material to contextualise the story. The edition admirably demonstrates that this paradoxical narrative—a domestic novel about work, a love story about repression, and a realist text that embraces the supernatural—repays and rewards close examination." (Maggie Berg )
"Kate Lawson's edition of Villette is expansive and precise, like the novel it contextualizes and introduces so well. Providing a rich analysis of the complex themes of the novel, the introduction at once acknowledges and limns the text's resistance to codification and carefully suggests the beautiful patterns in its seeming inconsistencies. The primary materials provide further context for the novel, particularly in regards to the 'Woman Question.' Arranged to be in dialogue with each other about this pivotal topic, these materials provide the background necessary for understanding the novel's involvement with those discussions." (Gail Turley Houston )

An interesting introduction to Charlotte Bronte
By Nick
One of the advantages of having the Kindle is that you can have access to all this amazing classical literature that you'd never buy. Villette by Charlotte Bronte is one of those. There are two Kindle free books of Villette, both are identical, so it doesn't matter which one you download.
The book's plot is quite interesting: You follow Lucy Snowe though her teens into her early 20s. She's not a typical heroine: she's a plain looking, average woman - sort of the anti-Austen stereotype. Lucy doesn't even have self esteem, but manages to flee England and moves to the European mainland.
Being my first Bronte novel, it's wildly delicious. The characters are flawed, there's tragedy and particularly wonderful moments. It does make you wonder how much of the book is autobiographical, and you feel a sense of loss because the Brontes were taken from us too soon before they could complete more works. You're sucked into the isolation of Lucy and in a way, that's more interesting than the plot.
Other and more talented reviewers can give you a better review of Villette (Signet Classics) than I can. But this book is a worthy download, and will bring you into a unique literary world and make you adore the creativity of the Brontes.

Wonderful edition
By Nichols K
This is an absolutely wonderful edition of what Virginia W thought was Charlotte B's finest book. For my part it is troubling my previous preference for Emily's work, and I am amazed it took me so long to find. The edition has a pretty and pretty sturdy cloth cover, an introduction containing some commentary and biographical material, a chronology, a glossary (containing mostly words I know and a few I didn't), a list of textual emendations, and copious notes including translations of the phrases in French that sometimes occur. As for the novel, the typeface is pleasant enough in its shape, and adequately sized for average eyes. That factor is why I recommend this particular edition. Since the text is in the public domain, a number of hardly readable, slapdash texts are hawked. Regardless of what you select, I suggest checking the number of pages. Or read it with an e-reader, if you're inured to that approach. Villette is not such a short book.

One of my favorite books.
By malkaone
One of my favorite books of all time. I always hope for a different ending and ALMOST believe it's going to happen this time. I should know better by now.....Great characters, some very funny bits, and I recognize something new about myself or my life every time I read it. I've been asked why I would read a book more than once; I reread a book that takes me places and times I like, or has characters that teach me new things. Villette is full of hopes and dreams, some thwarted and some accomplished, and full of finding happiness and fulfillment despite what life throws at you.
