AlterWorld was the first book i read in the "LitRPG" genre and introduced me to what is becoming my favorite genre to search for

This book is a little difficult to review. AlterWorld was the first book i read in the "LitRPG" genre and introduced me to what is becoming my favorite genre to search for on Amazon. On one hand you can review it as a stand alone novel and judge it on its own merits but because it is the end of a series at the same time you have to take a step back and say, ok does this book draw all the threads together that have been building for 6 books and have an awesome conclusion?
As a stand alone novel I would have to say this book is ok. As the world got more complex the detailed battle descriptions we received in the first three books became briefer and briefer and where once we would get an entire chapter detailing a fight or a dungeon, or going into a forest to grind, instead became paragraphs or sentences and that trend was continued in this book, which was a little disappointing to me as I think with a little more effort those scenes could have been fleshed out a bit more. A couple of items were mentioned but again, nothing like the detailed descriptions we got in the first couple of books. The translation was certainly better this book than the one's we received for books 4,5 and 6 and the story was interesting with Max struggling to not have his actions decided by the belief his followers and the world had in him, but the book still felt rushed in places. Like it was supposed to meet certain story goals and nothing was going to get in the way of those being reached.

Series wise the book also did an ok job in drawing all the story threads to a close. A lot of characters received only token mentions which was a little irritating after a character was a big part of previous books and then only received one mention in this book.Speaking of being rushed, at one point in a chapter you have Asmodeus recruiting Azmodan from the world of Diablo to help him invade Earth and then you learn in a round about way a few pages later that apparently Azmodan was nuked and died along with several Infernal Armies. Those two events probably could have taken up half a book by themselves. The whole intermingling of games on Earth theme was also very interesting and could have been explored in a book on its own, but was just rushed through on the way to the end of the series. As for the ending....I don't want to ruin anything but usually for the end of a series I am looking for an ending that is a little beefy and has some meat to it. This was like a thin soup in a small bowl. There was no substance and not a lot of weight to it. It was like the ending of the book was an afterthought.

I think being rushed was a big part of this series' problem. The first three books were good and had some good characters that we got to know a bit about. After those first three however I feel like the story was just rushed to completion and was missing a lot of the magic that made the first three books so good. Battle/dungeon descriptions, item description, receiving and completing quests, epic looting. It was all missing as the plot expanded. The biggest tragedy in this whole series to me is that you can have this big story with worlds colliding and the main character going from a solo player to controlling a guild and a land without sacrificing the LitRPG elements as long as you are willing to put the time into the writing and story development so it is included. The author mentioned in his note at the end of the book that it took him 2.5 years to write all 7 books of this series. That boggles my mind (look at the gap between the book release dates in the Kingkiller Chronicles, or the series of George RR Martin, or Robert Jordan) but also explains why the last half of the series felt so rushed and like it was missing so much. I don't know if this release schedule was at the urging of his publishers or he just needed money and wanted to capitalize on the surge of popularity LitRPG is going through, or D. Rus is just a really fast writer, but in this rush to get the books out and to get the story from point A to M to Z a lot of the good little details that make books so interesting just were not present. While I was happy to read every book as it came out, now that the series is over I can't help but wish that more time was taken to have the story and characters more fully fleshed out, while still staying true to the LitRPG elements that make these book interesting even as the story expanded What could have been a great series became merely mediocre. I finished the book thinking this was good but could have been better, which is a pretty good way of summing up the entire series. It was ok, but could have been better. A thought which I hope makes you as sad as it does me.

A little salty, but at least it's over.

I feel sort of guilty not loving this one. The first book in the series was amazing. The second? Amazing. The third? Amazing. From there, everything that I liked about the series started leaking out. The whole merging of realities deal kept getting in the way of the fun and wonder that made the genre fun. Now, it's all guns and embarrassing machismo. Most of the RPG is gone. A few notifications, that's really it. And then you get to the end, and it's just over. No closure, just an ending. So many threads left loose. So much potential loot left untouched. This is the last book in the series, and it ends in the same lopped off manner as the others. It really doesn't work. I'm very disappointed, a little confused, but I still can't say I didn't like it. I just expected more.

On a side note, the way the world is left at the end, I don't think I'll be interested in anything else set there. Too much pollution from our world bleeding in already.

Not up to scratch!

Disappointing! The first few books in the series are well worth reading but go downhill from there. Book 6 felt like an improvement with more involvement with Max on a personal level but that seems to have fallen away in this last book in the series.{spoiler alert}
In retrospect I feel that the negative turning point for the whole series was the death IRL of Max's paladin girlfriend. I will not be in a hurry to buy any new books by this author.

An entertaining history of alcohol

Full disclosure: I saw the author give a talk on this subject at a conference about a year ago. The talk was a little better because this author is an outstanding public speaker and merely a very good writer. So, what of the fruits of his labor? Has the author managed to distill the essence of boozy knowledge into a coherent creation or a delirious foment?

Well the good news is that this is an entertaining book that is easy to recommend to anyone with even a passing interest in wine, beer, or spirits. It's written to be read, not used as a reference book. The narrative, such as it is, is loosely organized into chapters that deal with specific facets of booze. Chapter one is about yeast. As a former yeast biochemist, I can say that it was one of the most accessible chapters written on one of my favorite organisms, yet I definitely learned a few things. However, I'm not convinced that everything I learned is absolutely accurate. The book is clearly much better researched than the average blog post but is it up to reference standards? If your reference standard is wikipedia, it probably is.

Chapter 2 is another strong chapter about sugar. Chapters 3 and 4 handle fermentation and distillation, and these highlight the weakness of the book's organization: how can you discuss fermentation without discussing yeast? Well, it's hard and it doesn't quite happen. Instead, the author's passion and enthusiasm clouds the narrative and he ends up switching topics so many times that it's hard to follow the thread. The next few chapters are occasionally choppy accounts of aging and smell/taste. The final couple of chapters are all about alcohol's effect on the body and brain, with an entire chapter devoted to hangovers. Much more time is spent discussing getting drunk (how exactly does that work?) and curing a hangover than exploring alcohol's impact on society, whether positive or negative.

But what it lacks in comprehensiveness, it makes up for with gusto! Even though I got a little lost in several chapters, it was usually because there were just too many interesting facts to cram in. This book is chock-full of fascinating tidbits of information, including the origins of the term 'bain-marie' (a type of double boiler) with side references to almost everything from British sailors to the Library of Alexandria. Perhaps it's fair to say the mixology on display slowed me down a bit, but didn't really affect my overall enjoyment of this slightly dizzying concoction. It does explain the deduction of a single star, though.

This book isn't perfect, but the author's passion and enthusiasm have created a book that's both entertaining and interesting. When it is finally released, I will recommend it to friends and buy at least one copy for my Dad. And if I ever see the author again, I'll buy him a drink.

Entertaining Book

As others have noted, after reading the book I was left questioning the accuracy of what the author had written as facts in a few places. One of the most obvious mistakes was on page 12 of the Introduction (Kindle edition) where he states that in Scotland they spell whisky without the “e” but in Canada and the United States they spell it with the “e”. I would think that anyone very familiar with whiskies would know that Canada normally spells whisky without the “e” as they do in Scotland and Japan. With a few exceptions, they generally spell whiskey with the “e” in the United States and Ireland. A simple mistake like that makes one wonder what other mistakes the author has made. While reading the book I was left with the impression that the author was more concerned about being humorous than necessarily being factual, although he gives the impression that what he is presenting is technically accurate. I should note that I have a technical background, which probably led to me questioning the accuracy of some of the author’s statements. With that said, the book presents a lot of technical information but in a way that is entertaining. If you enjoy reading about whiskies, then you would probably enjoy this book. But I would be hesitant to take what the author states literally without verifying it from a reliable source. Personally, I would read the book more for the entertainment value and view it’s accuracy in the same way that you would a conversation with your friends as you sit around enjoying a dram of whisky.

I just don't like the chatty stuff in this book - lots of ...

An OK read, I did mange to finish it. too much of the author in the book - where he is at, who he is taking to, how he got drunk as a skunk with friends to test hang-over cures. Not a whole lot of science, and it's watered down. I read a lot of non-fiction, I just don't like the chatty stuff in this book - lots of it is just page filler, chewing gum for the eyes. A much better book on 'booze' is "Drink: A Cultural History of Alcohol" by Iain Gately.

He compiled Vol. 1 while living in Los Angeles between 2001 and 2004. Ron is currently working on "Sleeping with Snakes [Vol. 2]", which will be set in Seattle and should be out in 2010. A Seedy Taste of the City of Angels

Growing up in Los Angeles, I had to get this book to read all of the stories about my hometown. And it delivers. 'Sleeping with Snakes' is a wide assortment of stories, from the humorous to the macabre, and almost all of them are worth reading twice. If you've never been to Los Angeles but plan to, read this book first. It may become your survival guide. Can't wait for the Seattle edition.

Good ending to a series

I've been with this series since 2011 and have been rooting for this book since the last one came out. I'm glad that we got the ending to Beth and Jacob's story because I was invested in it but until about 80% into the book Beth was wearing on my nerves. Seriously you have a man that would do anything and everything for you and there were more than a few times if Jacob said "F" it I wouldn't have been surprised. But all in all at the end of the day I'm glad it all got tied up in an HEA because that's what we all wanted! I would have liked to see a bit more after the Happily Ever After but I'm just glad that Carla pulled it out and we got this book : )

a damn good read, Not so with the "franchised books" riding ...

Those of us who are fans of this literary genre can probably remember the experience of reading of our first Tom Clancy novel back in the day. His writing was exciting, complex, technically detailed beyond all imagination, multi-dimensional, and always .. always .. a damn good read, Not so with the "franchised books" riding his name and his coattails. "Under Fire" has got to be the worst by far. It is simplistic, flat. contrived, and dull beyond yawning. This book is a 99 cent throw-away in an $11.99 Tom Clancy disguise. Save your money.

I've been reading this kind of stuff for 60 years since Hardy Boys by flashlight.
2-3 books a week. You name it.
I quit on this one.
Tom Clancy would be embarrassed to have name associated with this drivel but I guess he's dead and can't complain.
Someone is looking for bucks using his name.
Boring, boring, stupid boring plot which makes no sense.
Characters without soul.
Done

This book should not carry Tom Clancy's name. The topic is up to date, but the storyline is terrible and disappointing. Many times I thought to myself "wow, this was just inserted to fill some pages". The characters are shallow and the typical Tom Clancy spark just didn't ignite. Sorry to say this, but the book was not worth reading it.
