For three long years, the Family of God awaited the end of the world in a California desert. In 2008, the cult destroyed itself in mass suicide and final massacre. Plagued by guilt and PTSD, the survivors couldn’t talk about their experience until a psychiatrist treated them with poetry therapy.
Ranging in form from haiku to sonnets, this collection is their stories in verse, expressing hope, love, faith, regret, and pain. In these apocalyptic dreams, the survivors find their voice and finally tell why they joined the cult, what they hoped to achieve, how they failed, and the night of the massacre.

Review
"Children of God is a collection of both psychological andphysical turmoil that twists and turns the ideas of faith and realityinto something that grips the psyche and makes us question who we are, what we believe in, and what we are capable of. This poetic cult is oneyou won't be able to escape." -Stephanie M. Wytovich, author of Hysteria: A Collection of Madness
"A journey like none other that lives and breathes its progression of faith and destruction." -HorrorNews.net
"Sometimes ... the written word can bring the reader or writer closer to their own vulnerability and pain, their own soft center that is rarely breachedby the mundanity of everyday life. Children of God is one such book." -Geek Syndicate

Amazing from beginning to end
By Timothy W. Long
This book. Wow.
I sat down and read this in an afternoon. I read sections to my girlfriend. I marveled at how the authors seamlessly wove a tapestry of horribly damaged people using poetry to fight PTSD. Seriously could not put this down.
I hope Craig DiLouie and Jonathan Moon write more books together because this book is truly haunting.

A fantastic concept that will leave you in chills
By Joshua Pantalleresco
This is a great concept first and foremost. Craig Dilouie and Jonathan Moon using poetry as therapy for all the characters inside this cult was a great way to engage this story. Each poem is part of a much larger, terrifying whole. You read the descent of very real people into something monstrous. The first part of the book is a little slow, but is necessary so you get to know all the characters hearts and minds and while reading it, you understand these characters.
Once act one is finished and you find yourself a couple of poems into act two, you'get the sense that everyone in their heart of hearts knew that there was something wrong. What makes this book work I think is the reason they did nothing with their suspicions was the fear of what was going on and were rendered helpless by it.
Act three is devastating. The first haiku I read in there did me in. It was when you knew there was no going back. Even once the story is over, you know that not all the characters come out of this in one piece. Some end up exactly where they began. Others still believe. It's a very real, tangible result. This is one of the best poetry collections I've ever read. It's thoughtful, eerie, and like all great horror, possible. It's an amazing book and you should read it. It will grab you and not let go until the devastating end.

Brilliant; terrifying; unforgettable
By Kindle Customer
... and unexpected, considering I never read poetry. Though, after reading this slim volume, I have developed a new awe of the format.
The heart of this book consists of the poems of 11 of the 31 Family of God members who survived the years of sacrifice and striving the group endured to bring on the apocalypse and to make themselves worthy of the thousand year reign of god over a new heaven on earth, and who survived the day of suicide/murder in which other 374 group members died so as to bring about this new world order.
The handful of survivors are astonishingly diverse. One poet-member-murderer of members who resisted suicide remains an unrepentant true believer. An old woman misses her religious family. A forner prostitute summarizes a life of drugs, sexwork and faith in community that included having her face cut with a knife, the disfigurement of her beauty the price she paid to enter gods kingdom. The poems reflect bitterness, acceptance, and - amazingly! - even some hope. All of the authors voices haunt me. But those I will remember forever are the children. One survived because her mother hid her when the massacre began. Another survived because her mothers corpse hid her from those who searched for, hunted down and murdered the remnant who resisted death. Poems provide a format in which they can tell of their confusion and fragmented understanding of their experiences, without resolving the tension of the heaven/hell they survived.
The experience of these authors is extraordinary. But I nevertheless recognize myself in the conflict between good intentions and unexpectedly bad outcomes their words describe, as their desire to live well enough to bring god to earth turns their religious community into such a hell of living death on earth that some embrace the release of suicide and support killing of the unwilling as necessary for their salvation. Their experience is alien to me, thank god; but their bewilderment at how their best intentions brought on their worst nightmare, is familiar to me and most adults I know.
This book, as broken a hallelujah as I ever expect to encounter, has lodged in my soul. It is probably the most disturbing, thought-provoking and chilling book I have ever read. I expect it to stay with me forever. And I recommend it, unreservedly, for any adult.
