My acquaintance with the author is limited to brief visits and loving fellowship in his church. There I discovered a self-made scholar, an omnivorous reader with a remarkable library of theological and devotional books, and one who seemed to burn the midnight oil in pursuit of God. His book is the result of long meditation and much prayer. It is not a collection of sermons. It does not deal with the pulpit and the pew but with the soul a thirst for God. The chapters could be summarized in Moses' prayer, "Show me thy glory," or Paul's exclamation, "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!" It is theology not of the head but of the heart.
There is deep insight, sobriety of style, and a catholicity of outlook that is refreshing. The author has few quotations but he knows the saints and mystics of the centuries—Augustine, Nicholas of Cusa, Thomas à Kempis, von Hügel, Finney, Wesley and many more. The ten chapters are heart searching and the prayers at the close of each are for closet, not pulpit. I felt the nearness of God while reading them.

The Pursuit of God - made easier to know and practice.

Didn't realize that when they called this book a classic they really meant it. Many ideas and also clear direction to a more full walk with God (which, I think, is what we all really want). For the believer, God's "distance" is never the issue. It is only that we are to tune in to Him and the reassurance of His already immediate presence is known and felt by us. The idea of God's Throne in one's life (and there is room only for One on the throne at any time) is simplified. Yes, we want to walk with God. But remember it is He who reaches out to us before we can know Him in the first place. No wonder this book is so highly regarded.

Great book, but DON'T BUY THIS EDITION!

I recently ordered this book after reading Tozer's The Knowledge of the Holy this summer. I was very excited to read this book, as it is another of Tozer's classics. HOWEVER, DO NOT BUY THIS EDITION OF THE BOOK. IT IS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE! THERE ARE SO MANY TYPOS THAT DISTRACT FROM TOZER'S WRITING. I regret buying this version, and I will probably buy a different version of the book. I am very surprised that this edition even went to print. AMAZON, PLEASE DO NOT SELL THIS FLAWED PRODUCT!

A great read.

From the 50's, AW Tozer has managed to capture and foretell the primary ailment of the anemic church culture of our day. Oh that men would repent and do the first works, begging God Almighty for a renewing and filling of the power and presence of God in their lives and walk. That we would humble ourselves in the sight of the Lord that He would lift us up and exalt us in due time through the effect of a Godly inspired influence to a lost and dying world.

Adelaide Alexander Ovington was the wife of famous aviator Earle Lewis Ovington (1879 – 1936) Her husband was an American aeronautical engineer, aviator and inventor, and served as a lab assistant to Thomas Edison. "This book may read like fiction, but it is not. The first five months of my married life were spent among the hangars of New York, Chicago, Boston, and Columbus. I recorded events as they happened, before my impressions had time to cool. Then I put the manuscript away and became interested in babies.

"Now that aviation is coming into its own, and the children are big enough to go to school, I have brought the manuscript from its hiding place and put it in shape for publication.
It is true that men are flying higher and farther and faster than when Ovie flew his ticklish monoplane. But this is largely because the engines are more reliable and the airplanes more stable. They are designed with some thought for the safety of the aviator. Nowadays, they duplicate all important control wires so that if one breaks the other may be relied upon. And the wires themselves, instead of being solid, are cables. In the early days of exhibition flying—the period covered by this book—a single wire no larger than the lead in a pencil was used to operate the elevator and rudder. Its breaking meant certain death.

"The modern biplane is so stable that the hands may be removed from the controls for minutes at a time. In fact, with some of the battleplanes used in the Great War, the aviator locked his controlling levers so as to have his hands free to operate the machine gun. With the exhibition monoplanes, such as the Bleriot, a constant and precise movement of the control levers was necessary to keep the horizon where it belonged. And the aviator paid with his life for a single mistake.

"In the old days, the exhibition flyer who went "upstairs" always knew that he would come down again—somehow. His shortest flight was full of thrills. The aviator's wife, even though she stayed on earth, got nearly as many thrills as her husband, and no two of them were quite alike."

Charming book, but murky reprint

This is a delightful, first person account by the wife of Earle Ovington, a pilot who flew his Bleriot XI in many exhibitions, including what is billed as the first U.S. air mail flight. Mrs. Ovington describes how she met her husband aboard ship and then was caught up in the whirlwind of early aviation events, up until she convinced her husband to stop flying due to her pregnancy.
The quality of this reprint is embarrassingly poor. Most of the pages have dark backgrounds suggesting a very poor attempt at copying. The photographs are murky and a few of the pages are badly out of focus. Some of the pages show rubber stamps from the New York Public Library, which must have provided the original for this amateur copy.
Do yourself a favor and read this book online from Google Books - their copy is far more readable.

For a perfect printing quality edition, get the edition with the ISBN: 1626549575; found here: An Aviator's Wife. Oh, and this is a charming book. Other reviewers note that, but I wanted to make sure anyone considering this book was not put off by the reviewers mention of poor print quality, as there is a good edition.

Much more than just "To Build a Fire"

Lost Face is a collection of seven short stories by Jack London, all of which take place in Alaska or the Yukon Territory around the time of the Klondike Gold Rush. It is most notable for being the collection which contains "To Build a Fire," the classic story of a man trudging along the Yukon Trail, alone but for his dog, who finds himself struggling for survival against the 75-below-zero cold. It is London's most famous and widely read piece of writing, about as perfect as a short story can be, and sure to be read in junior high school English classes for centuries to come.

In addition to this renowned masterpiece, Lost Face is loaded with unexpected gems. I had never heard of the other six stories in this collection, and I was greatly surprised at how good they are. By the time Lost Face was published in 1910, London had already published five collections of Klondike tales, ranging from the excellent (The Faith of Men) to the OK (Love of Life). In the latter book, London showed signs of exhausting the subject matter and running out of ideas, but here in Lost Face he comes up with seven very solid, original, exciting tales.

The title story, "Lost Face," recalls the odyssey of a Polish freedom fighter who is imprisoned by the Russians, then escapes from the mines of Siberia and ends up in Alaska. He finds himself faced with torture and death at the hands of a Native American tribe, and desperately tries to come up with a way out of his predicament. "That Spot" is a comical tale in which the narrator recalls a dog he owned during his prospecting days in the Yukon; a magnificent, powerful, keenly intelligent beast who absolutely refused to perform the slightest bit of useful labor. In "Flush of Gold," two travelers on the sled dog trail stop at a cabin on Surprise Lake, where dwells a beautiful, mysterious woman who pines for a former lover. As one of the men relates the woman's history to his companion, the reader discovers the bizarre love story that darkens her past. "The Wit of Porportuk" tells of an Alaskan Indian chief, famous for his generosity and extravagance, who runs up big debts to a miserly money lender. When the time comes to collect the debt, the lender, Porportuk, sees it as an opportunity to claim the chief's beautiful daughter El-Soo for his mate. The girl, however, being very clever and well educated, comes up with a scheme to avoid becoming the greedy old man's property. Neither party's plans prove entirely successful, however, and just when you think you know where the story's going, it turns in a shocking and unexpected direction.

Comparing the stories of Lost Face to London's Klondike tales of a decade earlier, one really gets a sense of how much he progressed as a writer. These seven tales are rendered in smooth and beautiful prose, skillfully plotted, and remarkably vivid in their depiction of time and place. Reading Lost Face transports you to the bygone world of the exotic North. Through London's eyes, it's a wild and unpredictable place where the powerful beauty of nature is ever present and invigorating adventure is commonplace.

Jack London's little-known short story classics

This collection of short stories contains the well-known classic, "To Build a Fire," and that story deserves its place at the summit of American short stories. What the collection Lost Face has, however, are several other Jack London short stories that are sure to hold your attention. The title story, "Lost Face," depicts how a man's ability to keep his head in a dire situation saves him from a fate worse than death. My personal favorite in this collection is "That Spot," a great story for anyone who has owned or had to deal with a difficult dog. The narrator of "That Spot" remarks that there was something about Spot that made him uneasy, and the reader soon understands what that meant. This is a great collection of short stories, one which I recommend to anyone who likes Jack London's writing.

Lost Face

This fine little collection is a real keeper. Jack London's superb storytelling shines through, and each little short story in the book means something. I highly recommend this book.

One of the reasons I admire Jack London as a writer, is because of his ability to capture your imagination, and transport you to his character's settings and world. "Lost Face" is a great example of that.

On the train, Carrie meets Charles Drouet, a traveling salesman, who is attracted to her because of her simple beauty and unspoiled manner. They exchange contact information, but upon discovering the "steady round of toil" and somber atmosphere at her sister's flat, she writes to Drouet and discourages him from calling on her there.

Sister Carrie, Theodore Dreiser's revolutionary first novel, was published in 1900--sort of. The story of Carrie Meeber, an 18-year-old country girl who moves to Chicago and becomes a kept woman, was strong stuff at the turn of the century, and what Dreiser's wary publisher released was a highly expurgated version. Times change, and we now have a restored "author's cut" of Sister Carrie that shows how truly ahead of his time Dreiser was. First and foremost, he has written an astute, nonmoralizing account of a woman and her limited options in late-19th-century America. That's impressive in and of itself, but Dreiser doesn't stop there. Digging deeply into the psychological underpinnings of his characters, he gives us people who are often strangers to themselves, drifting numbly until fate pushes them on a path they can later neither defend nor even remember choosing.

Dreiser's story unfolds in the measured cadences of an earlier era. This sometimes works brilliantly as we follow the choices, small and large, that lead some characters to doom and others to glory. On the other hand, the middle chapters--of which there are many--do drag somewhat, even when one appreciates Dreiser's intentions. If you can make it through the sagging midsection, however, you'll be rewarded by Sister Carrie's last 150 pages, which depict the harrowing downward spiral of one of the book's central characters. Sister Carrie tells the story of a rudderless but pretty small-town girl who comes to the big city filled with vague ambitions. She is used by men and uses them in turn to become a successful Broadway actress, while George Hurstwood, the married man who has run away with her, loses his grip on life and descends into beggary and suicide. Sister Carrie was the first masterpiece of the American naturalistic movement in its grittily factual presentation of the vagaries of urban life and in its ingenuous heroine, who goes unpunished for her transgressions against conventional sexual morality. The book's strengths include a brooding but compassionate view of humanity, a memorable cast of characters, and a compelling narrative line. The emotional disintegration of Hurstwood is a much-praised triumph of psychological analysis. Theodore Dreiser had a hardscrabble youth and the years of newspaper work behind him when he began his first novel, Sister Carrie, the story of a beautiful Midwestern girl who makes it big in New York City. Published by Doubleday in 1900, it gained a reputation as a shocker, for Dreiser had dared to give the public a heroine whose "cosmopolitan standard of virtue" brings her from Wisconsin, with four dollars in her purse, to a suite at the Waldorf and glittering fame as an actress. With Sister Carrie, the original manuscript of which is in the New York Public Library collections, Dreiser told a tale not "sufficiently delicate" for many of its first readers and critics, but which is now universally recognized as one of the greatest and most influential American novels.

To me Sister Carrie is a cautionary tale. George Hurstwood has it made: the house on the hill, the job, family, money, prestige, you name it. Then young, innocent (sexy) Carrie comes along to spoil the whole thing; in the end, Hurstwood, left with the rags on his sick body, kills himself; while Carrie lives on to enjoy the success of a big-time theatre Star; albeit, alone. The moral of the tale: be satisfied with your position in life and don't use people as pleasure toys.

NOTE: This digital version is flawed--AVOID

"Sister Carrie" is an absolute must-read, but this digital version "prepared by Adeniyi Aderibigbe" is flawed. Thankfully, I'm familiar with the novel and Dreiser as a writer, so I noticed that the language--and punctuation--didn't flow as it should. It reads more like a flawed translation than a digital version of the original. Words and punctuation are missing.

For 99 cents for Kindle on Amazon, I highly recommend you buy this very complete anthology instead: "The Essential Anthology of American Realism (20+ Works) by Horatio Alger, Henry James, Upton Sinclair, Frank Norris, Mark Twain, William Dean Howells, Theodore Dreiser, Stephen Crane" http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0032UY45M.

glad I didn't as most of the interesting plot development ...

Thought of giving up about 1/3 way through because I found it overly bland. However, glad I didn't as most of the interesting plot development occurs in the second half. Dreiser's social realism gives great historical insights and is for me the most endearing aspect of this novel. Hurstwood's experience as a scab tram driver for example. Will definately be trying another Dreiser novel.

I turn to him, stepping in front of him before he can move away from the wall. "I need some comfort, and you do, too. I know this can't be, that it's not a long-term thing. Neither of us wanted that before, and let's face it--for all practical purposes, we have the weird relationship weirdness without the perks.I think we should finish that and move on. If friendship is next, I'm game. If there's nothing after this, that's fine. I don't want to think about tomorrow, and I'm dying to forget today. I figured you might want that, too."

By the time I say the last word, we're lip to lip. I'm close enough to kiss him,to press my body against his, but I don't. I leave the slight distance because I need him to say it's all right. He has to know this isn't some kid crush."Listen, you're not taking advantage of me. That's not what this is. I know what I need. I need a rebound guy. Nathan's breathing is heavier. With every breath, his chest swells and his nipples brush against mine through his shirt. The touch is faint, barely there. His eyes lock on mine, and I know he's torn. I stare, knowing I can't taste. I should walk away, find some popcorn, anything to put some distance between us, but I don't want to move. He's still close enough to feel the heat from his body. The memory of his sinful skin against mine is still fresh in my mind. My fingers twitch at my sides as I resist the urge to touch him. I'm drowning in him, in his scent, breathing him in. I can't stay this way. Friendship requires distance and right now there is none.

He's a friend who had a hard day. Give him a hug and be done with it. I slip up on my toes so I don't mash my breasts into him too much, and give the most sisterly hug I can manage. He's surprised at first, but then I feel his hands on my back. He pats me, and when he begins to pull away, he slows as my cheek brushes against his. A strand of my hair catches on his stubble, so he trails his finger over my cheek and tucks it behind my ear. His hand lingers. His lips are right there, so close to mine. I can't breathe. I don't move. His eyes dart between my eyes and my lips, finally lingering on my mouth until I have to suckin a breath. My chest swells, making my breasts press against his chest. I try not to breathe, but it doesn't help. The pressure of his body on mine is exquisite and unbearable at the same time.

My lips part and I stumble back into the wall. Nate moves with me, placing one of his hands on either side of my head. He moves slowly--as if he knows he shouldn't--sweeping his lips against mine. Secret still not revealed to us!

I love all of H.M. Ward's books, they keep me coming back for more every time. In this book Kerry and Nathan are having a conversation when Peter Ferro comes along, he had a letter for Nathan, because he didn't show up at the meeting. We don't really know what's in the letter but I have my suspicions. Kerry had already been through so much since she started college, and now her world is being turned upside down again with the knowledge of Nathan being a teacher. There are so many funny things, such as Kerry driving around in a bus, and the fact that a raccoon lives in this bus with his beedy eyes, but then there is also the sad stuff that Kerry had been through. I received an ARC for my honest review. The next installment will be just as great as this one because H.M. is an awesome writer, she never disappoints us. Holly, keep up the great work.

Oh my, so many hotness wrapped up in on series, it doesn't get any better than this!!! I am an addict, needing more!!! I can not figure out the connection of prof Nathan Smith and Pete FERRO yet....????hmm?hmmm . Beth ROCKS and is a true friend to Kerry (poor girl has been through a lot, and I can NOT get started on her mother or this review will get UGLY!) Beth's hot brothers and Carter.... still a mystery!!! Need next book.

Excellent Follow up to S & L 2

Secrets & Lies 3 is a great follow up to # 2. The story line develops further, more loops are thrown at you and the forbidden romance is... Well you need to read it (I'm not throwing in spoilers). This series is a great addition to the other HM Ward story lines. I love the direct this one is taking. It's right up there for me with The Arrangment

A Reading the Paranormal Review

I love love love these glimpses of life we're getting for the aliens and their mates. I mean, I love the big stories, too, but the little ones just make me so happppppy.

This time around we got to see Megan and Cashol being all sweet and gooey with one another. Megan's a wee bit on the clingy side, but she has good reason to be. I ADORED how she loved Cashol's goofy side and tried to temper her clinginess because she knew Cashol was doing something that needed to be done. Honestly, I really, really got where her fears were coming from. After what she'd been through during the initial abduction, the thought of losing someone close to her was overwhelming.

This one got a big *thumbs up* from me, although it's definitely not a stand alone. It just adds a little depth to the characters we've come to know and love on this icy planet.

This series is a damned addiction. Each one is better than the last and not as good as the next. They are absolutely habit forming. It is impossible to pick a favorite. Read this one, but before you do, do yourself a favor and buy all the others in the series too because you will not want wait to read them all once you get started!

I love this novella. Nora trying to deal with having twins and her mates out hunting. I love having Asha helping out so she can get her baby fix in. It was seeing a different side of her besides her being jealous and spiteful. Great job.

My problem with the Kindle Bantam Classic edition of Othello is that there are no footnotes at the bottom of each page. This means no immediate vocab definitions or comprehension aids. I bought the Kindle edition because my old Signet paperback Othello is yellow with age, plus tiny font. (I'm rereading Othello before watching the live performance starring Blair Underwood and Richard Thomas.) Not being a scholar of Elizabethan English, I do need annotative help with the vocab and idioms. So unfortunately, it's back to the old, barely readable but annotated Signet print version for me.

Great play, great electronic version

Othello was one of the first plays I was exposed to when I was younger. It has murder, suicide, intrigue and things that would get a teenager into Shakespeare.

I've had mixed success with some of the free Kindle versions of Shakespeare. Some have been good, some have been awful. This is an exceptional version. It's formatted nicely and is easy to read. The only "lack" is that it is without line numbers, so if you were to use this for academic reasons, you might have an issue or two.

Thus far, Othello's my favorite free Shakespeare play. I missed how much of a jerk Iago was, and all the deception that lead to Othello killing Desdemona.

After having graduated from college 19 years ago, I was a little intimidated about reading Shakespeare again. However, the Folger Library makes reading Shakespeare much easier to follow (& more fun)! The words that appear as "foreign" to the modern English reader are briefly explained on the left side of each page -- which makes the text easier to follow. I only wish they had these words in bold, because I ended up highlighting the words that are referenced. Because of this, however, I don't have to read a synopsis of each act or scene before delving into the actual text!

Othello is such an interesting play that I find it hard to put it down! I definitely plan on reading more Shakespeare's plays from the Folger Library!!!

The Republic (Greek: Πολιτεία, Politeia; Latin: De Republica) is a Socratic dialogue, written by Plato around 380 BCE, concerning the definition of justice (δικαιοσύνη), the order and character of the just city-state and the just man—for this reason, ancient readers used the name On Justice as an alternative title (not to be confused with the spurious dialogue also titled On Justice). The dramatic date of the dialogue has been much debated and though it might have taken place some time during the Peloponnesian War, "there would be jarring anachronisms if any of the candidate specific dates between 432 and 404 were assigned".Plato's best-known work, it has proven to be one of the world's most influential works of philosophy and political theory, both intellectually and historically. In it, Socrates along with various Athenians and foreigners discuss the meaning of justice and examine whether or not the just man is happier than the unjust man by considering a series of different cities coming into existence "in speech", culminating in a city called Kallipolis (Καλλίπολις), which is ruled by philosopher-kings; and by examining the nature of existing regimes. The participants also discuss the theory of forms, the immortality of the soul, and the roles of the philosopher and of poetry in society.
