Uniquely written account of the Sixties

Sheppard's account of Sixties activism and life in the Socialist Workers Party (SWP-US) is fascinating. More than fifty chapters explore the trajectory of anti-racist and antiwar struggles from the perspective of a revolutionary socialist who participated in much of the upheavals that define the time period.
Sheppard does two things particularly well in this book: 1) Asserts the real history of the Sixties against the safely watered-down version most commonly expressed today. 2) Puts a focus on edifying incidents of interest to today's activists that are generally left out of even the best left-wing histories (for example the anti-communism case against the YSA in Indiana).
Unfortunately, a few weaknesses detract from the punch of this volume. Most importantly, Sheppard could have enlisted a better editor. Sometimes the narrative loses the forest for the trees (just how big did the SWP ever get? there are lots of anecdotes but the reader is left guessing) and the overall writing mechanics are weaker than Sheppard, as the former editor of the Militant newspaper, is clearly capable of. Lastly, it would have been nice to hear more of the author's political analysis.
Overall, this book is highly recommended to activists young and old. The world of the 1960s has many reflections today--I hope a growing socialist movement is one of them.
