Alexander III of Macedon, better known to the world as Alexander the Great, was one of the most powerful rulers of the ancient world. During his time, he amassed the largest amount of land that the Greek empire would ever see. He seemed to capture land with ease and managed to spread the culture and language of the Greek empire far and wide, ushering in what is referred to as the Hellenic Period.
Born the son of King Philip II of Macedon and his main wife, Olympias, Alexander had a privileged upbringing. While much about his childhood has been lost to the proverbial sands of time, we know that he had a very close relationship with his mother and a rather tumultuous relationship with his father, as his father was gone a good deal of the time, conquering lands and their women.
It was during the time of his father that the various Greek city-states came together under a single ruler. Dubbed the League of Corinth, it was comprised of all the regional city-states and Philip II was the sole leader of the League. He was, unfortunately, unexpectedly assassinated at his daughter's wedding, which threw the League and Macedonia into a bit of chaos...

T.D. van Basten is a young man living in the Mediterranean region to follow his passion and explore the old historical areas. He is a passionate lover of history. Growing up he has always loved to learn about the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and other historical events. With his power of imagination, he could almost live and see the world as how it used to be.
After graduating from the University, he began to see and explore the world. Taking trips to various regions himself, such as Egypt to discover the pyramids and famous tombs. Followed by spending months in Spain and the surrounding areas, where he still lives. This allowed him to see the worlds that he loved first hand. Over the years he has assembled an extraordinary collection of artifacts, and he is now ready to share the tales that he always loved with you.

This book has an amazing and immediately got my attention the approach used by the author to introduce yourself to the person of Alexander the Great, his background and all his military achievements until his death. Alexander change the course of history and his legacy remains in our modern culture. I really love this book and I recommended it to all!

A fabulous historical retelling of one of history's most fascinating lives. The greatest book that I have yet read of the warrior-king and conqueror, who was and is-as Basten says-the absolute embodiment of human ambition. He was a man who wanted passionately to rule the world. While we may condemn him for the deaths he caused, I admire him as a man who set out to achieve the impossible. And he did.

Best History I've Ever Read

This is by far the most well-written, informative, interesting history I have ever read on Ancient Greece or any other subject. You can learn everything you ever wanted to know about the Greeks, but you don't have to kill the excitement of the subject in the oppressive details that most history books toil over. Instead you have a good story of the dawn of our civilization.
