How is this book unique?
Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe is the third novel by George Eliot, published in 1861. An outwardly simple tale of a linen weaver, it is notable for its strong realism and its sophisticated treatment of a variety of issues ranging from religion to industrialisation to community. The novel is set in the early years of the 19th century. Silas Marner, a weaver, is a member of a small Calvinist congregation in Lantern Yard, a slum street in an unnamed city in Northern England. He is falsely accused of stealing the congregation's funds while watching over the very ill deacon. Two clues are given against Silas: a pocket knife, and the discovery in his own house of the bag formerly containing the money. There is the strong suggestion that Silas' best friend, William Dane, has framed him, since Silas had lent his pocket knife to William shortly before the crime was committed. Silas is proclaimed guilty. The woman Silas was to marry breaks their engagement and later marries William. With his life shattered and his heart broken, Silas leaves Lantern Yard and the city.

From Library Journal
This 19th-century classic, read by Andrew Sachs, is a tale of betrayal, gold, and love, encased in the elegant symmetrical structure so popular in traditional English fiction, featuring Marner, the weaver, who is framed for theft by his best friend and becomes a recluse, focusing his strong affections only on the store of golden coins he receives in payment for his work. As usual, Chivers has produced an excellent audio presentation of a literary masterpiece. Alas, in this day and age fewer and fewer readers not enrolled in literature classes actually read the works of what are frequently referred to as "dead white males" even if, as in this case, they were actually written by a woman. For this reason, this title is recommended for all academic but only larger public libraries.

Spend the time, be rewarded!
By Hugh TenEyck Keleher
I remember our sophomore high school class having to take turns reading this aloud! At 15, I found this exercise excruciating, particularly because many in the class were not good readers. 56 years later, I suspect that our teacher was intentionally punishing us for not being able to appreciate George Eliot. The plot and the exposition are quite convoluted, and while Eliot's contemporary readers relished the book and made it popular then, I doubt that Trump-era Americans will have the patience to wade through this excellent morality tale. The Donald could NEVER understand it! Highly recommended, nevertheless....

The So called Classic Good Books is not.
By Janice L. Wilson
It is the worst done edition I have received from Amazon or anywhere else -- filled with typos, misprints, and terrible syntax (not George Eliot's but the so-called simple minded annotations. I do not need and nor does anyone else to be told in the so called Introduction that: "It is about a man.:" Nor do I need to know that it is "an amazing book." AND THE COVER IS WILDLY INAPPROPRIATE COVER ART for the actual story Whatever the CLASSIC GOOD BOOKS is, it is not a legitimate publishing house and should not be part of your enterprise.
Look at pages 214 and 215 if you want to see a waste of paper.... Sorely disappointed.

It's a classic!
By grammawamma
I very much enjoyed this classic book. I was never required to read it in school, so had no preconceived opinion about it. It was a sad tale with a happy ending of the "and they lived happily ever after type." The only reasoning I rated it 4 stars instead of 5 is because of all the detail. Like a lot of classics, there was so much detail that I neither wanted nor understood. For the most part, I just skimmed over it. Nevertheless, I found it a good story, well worth the time to read.
