Far from the Madding Crowd (1874) is Thomas Hardy's fourth novel and his first major literary success. It originally appeared anonymously as a monthly serial in Cornhill Magazine, where it gained a wide readership.
The novel is the first to be set in Hardy's fictional county of Wessex in rural south west England. It deals in themes of love, honour and betrayal, against a backdrop of the seemingly idyllic, but often harsh, realities of a farming community in Victorian England. It describes the farmer Bathsheba Everdene, her life and relationships - especially with her lonely neighbour William Boldwood, the faithful shepherd Gabriel Oak, and the thriftless soldier Sergeant Troy.
On publication, critical notices were plentiful and mostly positive. Hardy revised the text extensively for the 1895 edition and made further changes for the 1901 edition.[1]
The novel was listed at number 48 on the BBC's survey The Big Read in 2003. The book finished 10th on the Guardian's list of greatest love stories of all time in 2007.
The novel has been dramatised several times, notably in an Oscar-nominated 1967 film directed by John Schlesinger.

Novel by Thomas Hardy, published serially and anonymously in 1874 in The Cornhill Magazine and published in book form under Hardy's name the same year. It was his first popular success. The plot centers on Bathsheba Everdene, a farm owner, and her three suitors, Gabriel Oak (a generous shepherd), Sergeant Troy (a young, handsome, and inconsiderate soldier), and William Boldwood (the owner of the neighboring farm). The contrasting relationships between Bathsheba and her suitors are a study of the many faces of love, including honest, heartfelt love and unscrupulous and manipulative adoration. --The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

Conflicted but overall I enjoyed it

I'm somewhat conflicted after reading FFTMC. I selected this book for multiple reasons: I wanted to 1) read another classic, 2) be swept away by a famous romantic story, and 3) watch the movie with Carey Muligan ( I always try to read the book before I see the movie). Well, I definitely got 2 out of 3. There were parts of the story that I really enjoyed and I totally fell in love with Gabriel, but I found many of the other characters quite annoying. I've also heard that this book has been called one of the first feminist novels to be written- I find that very hard to believe! Yes, Bethsheba was head strong and strong willed, but that hardly makes her a model of a feminist character. I actually almost put the book down because of Hardy's mysogynistic declarations of the female psyche and character! It was extremely irritating to say the least! My only motivation at times was my stubbornness to always finish a book I've started. Overall, I enjoyed the book- partly I think because I was so happy with the ending and partly I think because I can finally watch the movieM

In a simple tale about a solid, loyal and intelligent farmer/shepherd who lacks great looks and falls into poverty through bad luck, Thomas Hardy describes how swings in economic status in the late 19th century England greatly affected many characters in this novel. But those basic characteristics of kindness, common sense and loyalty would be most valuable and, in this case, rewarded. It is interesting and refreshing to learn how human nature has not changed certain basic facts of life even with the passing of 150 years or more.
