Amazon.com Review
Fitzgerald's first novel, reprinted in the handsome Everyman's Library series of literary classic, uses numerous formal experiments to tell the story of Amory Blaine, as he grows up during the crazy years following the First World War. It also contains a new introduction by Craig Raine that describes critical and popular reception of the book when it came out in 1920.
From Publishers Weekly
Fitzgerald's first novel, about a coterie of Princeton socialites, appears in a 75th anniversary edition.

From Library Journal
The first novel that launched Fitzgerald to literary fame and glory in 1920 is now in the public domain and will undoubtedly be released by a number of publishers. These two editions represent both ends of the spectrum. The Cambridge edition is the latest in its ongoing series of corrected texts of Fitzgerald's work. Aimed at the scholarly audience, it includes an introduction, explanatory notes, and illustrations. The Penguin paperback also has an introduction but is a basic, no-frills edition, which is adequate for the casual reader. Serious American literature collections should stock the Cambridge text, which is probably the finest edition of this novel to date.

Good, but always wanting more
By ifiwereaudrey
The Great Gatsby is my second favorite book, so This Side of Paradise intrigued me. I find Fitzgerald is always an easy read, simply because his writing has an easy flow and he loves to write detail without over complicating the language. While this book was not my favorite, I did enjoy reading it. My only problem really is I was left wanting more! I did not find the ending as conclusive as I had hoped. Either way, it is definitely worth a read.

Meh
By Silver Star
Well, it was okay. I mean, I know it's F. Scott Fitzgerald, but it did not float my boat the way I expected it to, and certainly not as much as The Great Gatsby. The man sure can write, and it's always a treat to read something as literate, but in the long run, the story was really about nothing at all. Overall it was a mundane journey of a young man through his adolescence, teens, and college years, as he meandered around stewing in his own confusion and the kind of introspection that only a college student can muster up. I felt compelled to finish it, just in case something actually happened, and several times I felt that something was JUST ABOUT to happen... but alas, the Happening just fizzled out, leaving poor Amory more depressed, less confident, and ultimately less interesting altogether. The digression into a playwright's narrative partway through the book was also a little disconcerting, and I don't think it added anything to the story's value. Sorry, F. Scott. Sorry, English Lit professors everywhere.

Death of a Slacker
By Ken Bartsch
As I read This Side of Paradise I often thought of Edith Wharton's House of Mirth and the plight of Lily Bart. Amery and Lily should, by the standards of their time, enjoy the advantages of their breeding. But they are doomed to failure: Lily because she cannot marry the man of her choice, whom she might love; Amery because he has no direction or ambition.
Unlike Lily Bart, Amery is not a likeable fellow. A mamma's boy and slacker, he has vague aspirations to recognition by his schoolmates but no willingness to work for it. Late in the novel he discovers socialism, largely because he has squandered the privileges of his moneyed class.
I admit I was saddened by Lily's death; I expected right to the end that she would turn her life around and enjoy a happily ever after. Amery doesn't seem to die in the end, though there's no particular reason for him to live. He has become a well-read hobo, spouting half-baked theories at anyone who will listen.
I've heard it said the aspiring novelist should finish his first novel, lock the manuscript in a drawer of his desk, then throw the key and the desk in the river. Fortunately, Fitzgerald didn't do that with this first novel; This Side of Paradise reveals how far an adequate writer has to mature to achieve the greatness of Tender is the Night and The Great Gatsby.
