"Well, hello darlin' and how do you do?"

Bartender-turned-tutor Theo is struggling to make ends meet in Orlando. He refuses to go back to Jersey with his tail between his legs after a breakup and a failed business venture. With his nose to the grindstone, Theo finds himself sticking to the periphery of social life — and he’s comfortable out of the spotlight.

"I was startin' to reckon you were only a dream, so I'm pleased as punch you finally decided to arrive."

But his weeks are punctuated by an unlikely performance that he finds himself looking forward to more and more…

"That… y'know that is one hell of a pickup line," Theo says. "I've got to offer you props for the originality, at least."

Enter Jeff: the swaggering, tattooed, 50’s-obsessed frontman of an oldies cover band, Tone Jeff. The only thing Jeff loves more than bare-knuckles brawling and impersonating Elvis on Friday nights is Theo, but his come-ons keep coming up cold.

"Pickup line? Now don't be cruel, bright eyes, this is serious stuff. We're talkin' love at first sight, heavenly light and choruses of angels — I'm wounded you'd reduce your future heartthrob to a pickup line."

Between black eyes and bottom shelf bourbons, Jeff tries his hardest to win over the bartender. But the leather-clad flirt can’t seem to convince Theo he’s more than just talk — no matter how many songs he dedicates to the one he loves.

Theo knows a package so pretty is too good to be true. After Jeff crosses a line with his advances, Theo doesn’t know if he’s more scared of being a one-night fling or a long term thing.

But just when Theo thinks he may be ready to enter the whirlwind world of lovers lanes and sock hops, he realizes that they might end with a fizzle instead of a bang.

Jeff might be The One. He said he’d wait forever — but has Theo kept him waiting too long?

(You’re the One That I Want is a standalone, low-heat m/m love story with a happily ever after ending and two free explicit bonus scenes for newsletter subscribers.)

Old school rock n’ roll, sunshine, and a sweet, sweet, love story
By Amelia L. Blevins
When I started reading You’re the One that I Want, I was surprised by how quickly I felt immersed in it. Maybe it’s because I’ve never been to Florida, maybe it’s because the Night Library sounds like the bar from my dreams, or maybe it’s because the idea of a tattooed Elvis-impersonating rocker does things to my insides I didn’t expect. Whatever it was, this story took me into a little world I never knew how much I wanted to be in.

Kay does such a wonderful job immersing readers into this story, and particularly in the characters. Kay takes the reader on Theo’s journey so closely that every step felt like one I would take. I’ll admit that when we first meet Jeff, I was equally put off by his over-the-top, swaggering persona just as Theo is. Though, as we stay with him, as Theo accidentally worms his way into Jeff’s life - and Jeff into his - I slowly realized that I was falling in love with him right along with Theo.

Of course, I cannot write about this book without discussing my new-found love of Jeff Barron. Kay does an amazing job making him seem like a caricature only to peel away the layers and let us see what’s behind the bravado and fast talking. Jeff is so much his aesthetic, and what I love is that it goes so deep - it’s more than a look: it’s a way of life that shows just how surprisingly pure he can be for a bourbon-swigging, tattooed rocker. And that sweetness really is what took me by surprise. The old-fashioned style that Jeff embodies makes me want to find that in myself.

The incorporation of oldies tunes throughout the book is such a delight - I found myself dancing in my seat throughout so many different nights at the Night Library (a bar I desperately need to be a real place, like, right now). Not to mention just how cool Tone Jeff is - Jeff and the band are guys I’d love to spend time with. They each have their own unique flair, but when brought together they make the band work in such an unlikely way.

The character dynamics and the balance feel so organic and natural that as I read, I felt like I must have already known these people, because they slid so easily into my mind’s eye, like they’ve always been there. The dynamic of the little Night Library family - Dale and Jackie and even the busboys Hector and Max - are quirky but so warm and lovely. When you add the band to the mix, they’re all such a delight. I was aching to be a part of that Christmas tradition and I’m tempted to start my own just like it.

This was a sweet love story that manages to break the mold in lots of exciting ways without failing to deliver the expected goods. I highly recommend it if you’re looking to put an aching smile on your face and stars in your eyes.

Do Not Pass This Story Up
By Alexandra Parris
(Disclaimer: Review is being left after receiving a free advanced copy from the author.)

Kay Simone has crafted an absolutely breathtaking romance in You're the One That I Want. Taking place mostly in the Night Library, a quiet bar in Orlando, the unconventional, adorable relationship between Theo and Jeff is both realistic and storybook at the same time. Simone has written a gay romance novel that does not, for one second, dwell on the sexualities of its characters—if you're looking for a coming out story full of struggle and strife, this story is not for you. I was hooked from the first page, with the aggressively unique Jeff grabbing my attention and not letting go. The struggle Theo, the young bartender and focus of Jeff's affections, goes through is one so many will relate to: someone intriguing falling head over heels for you, and you having to figure out how the hell to react.

With a pleathora of 50s slang, Elvis hits, and a slow-burn romance, You're the One That I Want will have you swooning, "Oh, honey," and craving more.

read it, dude
By Jared
One of the first things that surprised me when I began reading this was how instantly I felt connected to the characters, and how quickly I became engrossed in their stories. The writing is very high quality, and the dialogue is entertaining to read without seeming forced. Jeff's mannerisms and choice of words always felt like "Jeff" things to say, and I never felt that any other word or scene choices were out of place.

This story is very heartfelt, romantic, interesting, and just a little bit angsty in a way that'll satisfy almost any reader. The story itself is engrossing, the characters are relatable and realistic, and I can't find any other thing to say other than everything fits in its place and I was never bored reading this.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book!
