An interesting introduction to Charlotte Bronte

One of the advantages of having the Kindle is that you can have access to all this amazing classical literature that you'd never buy. Villette by Charlotte Bronte is one of those. There are two Kindle free books of Villette, both are identical, so it doesn't matter which one you download.

The book's plot is quite interesting: You follow Lucy Snowe though her teens into her early 20s. She's not a typical heroine: she's a plain looking, average woman - sort of the anti-Austen stereotype. Lucy doesn't even have self esteem, but manages to flee England and moves to the European mainland.

Being my first Bronte novel, it's wildly delicious. The characters are flawed, there's tragedy and particularly wonderful moments. It does make you wonder how much of the book is autobiographical, and you feel a sense of loss because the Brontes were taken from us too soon before they could complete more works. You're sucked into the isolation of Lucy and in a way, that's more interesting than the plot.

Other and more talented reviewers can give you a better review of Villette (Signet Classics) than I can. But this book is a worthy download, and will bring you into a unique literary world and make you adore the creativity of the Brontes.

Wonderful edition

This is an absolutely wonderful edition of what Virginia W thought was Charlotte B's finest book. For my part it is troubling my previous preference for Emily's work, and I am amazed it took me so long to find. The edition has a pretty and pretty sturdy cloth cover, an introduction containing some commentary and biographical material, a chronology, a glossary (containing mostly words I know and a few I didn't), a list of textual emendations, and copious notes including translations of the phrases in French that sometimes occur. As for the novel, the typeface is pleasant enough in its shape, and adequately sized for average eyes. That factor is why I recommend this particular edition. Since the text is in the public domain, a number of hardly readable, slapdash texts are hawked. Regardless of what you select, I suggest checking the number of pages. Or read it with an e-reader, if you're inured to that approach. Villette is not such a short book.

One of my favorite books.

One of my favorite books of all time. I always hope for a different ending and ALMOST believe it's going to happen this time. I should know better by now.....Great characters, some very funny bits, and I recognize something new about myself or my life every time I read it. I've been asked why I would read a book more than once; I reread a book that takes me places and times I like, or has characters that teach me new things. Villette is full of hopes and dreams, some thwarted and some accomplished,and full of finding happiness and fulfillment despite what life throws at you.

Not even worth free

I noticed the Swann"s Way was listed as one of the best books written. It may be, but after 50 pages I wished the entire assembly of dull, pretentious characters the worst possible damage. It is a shame that the earth did not open and swallow them whole by the 20th page as that would have made a fine story. I only wish I had a hard copy rather than the electronic version so I could hurl the book across the room.

The exquisite dissection of ordinary moments...

*Swann's Way* is a difficult novel to recommend unreservedly. Not because it isn't a beautiful and affecting masterpiece, but because it's inevitably the sort of novel that--by its very nature--is not everyone's cup of tea. A novel that begins with a 60+ page riff on a man falling asleep and recalling the drama surrounding his mother's goodnight kiss may be enough to turn off even your most enthusiastic fan of one of Flaubert's potboilers. On the other hand, for anyone who appreciates the sensual, visual, and musical possibilities of language and the infinite psychological subtleties revealed in the gimlet-eyed scrutiny of self and others there are few--if any--novelists that top Proust or novels more spellbindingly beautiful than *Swann's Way.*

The first of Proust's legendary six-volume epic, *In Search of Lost Time,* *Swann's Way* actually consists of three distinctly separate but closely linked stories--the narrator's famous recollection of his childhood; the tortured and scandalous love affair between Charles Swann and the courtesan Odette de Crecy; and the narrator's later schoolboy crush on Swann and Odette's willful daughter, Gilberte. In each section, Proust's analysis of the foibles, passions, and disappointments of his dramatis personae is so exact, so incisive there hardly seems anything left worth saying about the topics he turns his surgical eye and sets his pen to dissect. His observation of people in society--their vanity, snobbishness, and petty cruelty--are wickedly amusing, devastatingly accurate, and, on rarer occasions, touching. No better account of the vicissitudes, illusions, and degradations of love exists in all of literature than the section entitled *Swann in Love.* Anyone who's ever been in love will instantly recognize himself with wry amusement and cringing embarrassment in Swann's agonizing travails.

The ability to "fool" ourselves into thinking that what we love--whether a person, place, or time--lies somewhere "out there" as opposed to within ourselves is the main theme of the final section, *Place-Names. The Name* but it's also one that permeates the entire book. "The memory of a particular image is but the regret for a particular moment." In a series of novels that goes under the general title *In Search of Lost Time* this epigram is indicative of the bittersweet and paradoxical nature of Proust's project--the attempt to find in memory and to recapture in literature what is gone forever even if it never existed apart from our consciousness in the first place.

It seems that time is not traditionally linear but rather, in truth, humans are subject to triggers, as simple as a madeleine and a cup of tea, which can send one unwittingly hurtling into the past. Depending upon the associations one may have with such triggers, the journey may be pleasant or painful. Otherwise, the mysteries of life may escape one's sense and sensibility. Proust's syntax is a mile long and if you demand a structured plot, you are likely to be disappointed by this novel. However, the beauty of the language is not of this world: it is surreal, lyrical, dreamlike, entrancing, astonishing. I recommend that you simply surrender to Proust's supreme gift for the language and drift along on the pure beauty of the language alone. This novel represents the early work of a genius and no matter what biases one may proffer about the writer, there is little doubt that the writing is one of a kind. Proust is on my Top 10 Writers of All Time List: perhaps, only James Joyce has a signature maximalist literary style as unique and creatively rich as Proust. I hope you venture to read this somewhat daunting novel -- it's one of the truly great ones.

John Locke’s “Second Treatise of Government” constitutes the second portion of his “Two Treatises of Government” which was first published 1689. In the first treatise Locke presents an extended attack against Robert Filmer’s “Patriarcha”, which calls for a government based entirely on divinely ordained absolute monarchy. Locke covers such themes as conquest and slavery, property, representative government, and the right of revolution. The “Second Treatise of Government” remains to this day a highly influential work if political science and helped to lay the foundation for many of the principles of western democracy.

Easily three of the most monumental works in the history of Political Science.

It is well known, of course, that John Locke was a major inspiration behind the Founding Fathers. With this book, it is easy to understand why.

In the "First Essay On Government", Locke takes the argument of the "divine right" of kings--and uses a brilliant, clever, and effective combination of Biblical theology and logical argument to completely obliterate that concept.

With that out of the way, Locke turned to write his "Second Essay On Civil Government", where the question is asked: Now that we have disproved any "entitlement" to royalty...where do we go from here? What is the basis for governing a civil society?

The major highlight of this treatise is Chapter 2, in which Locke formally establishes the doctrine of Natural Rights. He starts with the natural state of Man, leading up to the necessary elements of Man's existence--the philisophical necessities, of course, being "rights".

There is an interesting moment where Locke questions whether a citizen of one society should ever be punished for breaking the laws of another socety, even if said citizen is IN that other society. It's worth noting that Locke was quick to note that it is a QUESTION, not a statement of belief. Perhaps it's his idea of a "modest proposal".

Contrary to popular belief, Locke is not a "Poor Man's Hobbes" or a "Confused Man's Hobbes". Locke's views on rights and Liberty have quite a few differences from Hobbes's: while often subtle, they are very important, indeed. It becomes clear while reading Locke's prescriptions for government--including the people's rights to alter ot abolish it--that Locke would not have recommended an authoritarian government of the likes of the Leviathan!

Finally, there is "A Letter Concerning Toleration". Here, Locke tackles the issue of "seperation of church and state". He discusses what it truly means...and how it does NOT mean the weaking of religion that secular progressives of the Left desire it to mean. To the contrary, abolishing a state religion, Locke argues, actually should STRENGTHEN the religious element of a free society.

John Locke was, in short, a man years ahead of his time. It is a tragedy that few, if any, in government have seemed willing to listen to him.

Arrived early and as described! The book itself is a cornerstone of our existence as a country in the U.S., so I would recommend this to anybody interested in our founding and the theories and thought processes behind it.

Why review Locke himself?

This is the edition to get, regardless of the fact that you may only need to read the second treatise for most classes. The print is somewhat small but not blinding, the book is sturdy and will stand up to abuse, and like another reviewer stated it is well formatted and organized.

Where this book really shines is in the 3 essays provided, all from highly competent and recognized scholars. Ruth Grant's essay "Locke on Women and The Family" is by far the best, and her analysis of how we fairly and unfairly impose modern questions on historical figures is instructive far past the single case of John Locke. John Dunn's essay is a bit obtuse and convoluted but provides a fascinating look at Lockean scholarship in perspective, while Shapiro's essay is the least captivating but perhaps the most important, as it attempts to distinguish just how much (or poignantly little) Locke actually had to say about democracy and majority rule.

Don't waste your time with a 2 dollar paperback edition; treat your brain to the feast presented in this fine piece of an academic edition.

Who wrote this?

I preordered this book, (its Jordan Silver so, duh!) and it took me this long to finish it. Good thing to, because I was running out of steam. Coincidentally, this book was severely lacking in it as well.

That's not me. If I have a Jordan Silver book in my Kindle laden hands, you wouldn't be able to pry that thing away from me with a crow bar.
This time though? *sigh*

It was boring, repetitive and way, WAY too angsty-y for my taste. For an author who claims not to like angst, this book was 90% stuffed with it.
Actually, if Jordan Silver's name hadn't been on the delicious looking book cover, I'd never had known it was her book.
Seriously, it isn't her style at all.

When I pick up her books I know I'm in for 3 things.
1: Hot and Heavy content
2. Delicious, crazy alpha males
3. A hold onto your panties, fast paced romance that makes your toes curl and time fly by.

We get none of that here.

I'm going to explain myself, so there will be SPOILERS!!......

Sure, Kyle is an alpha male, but then again he isn't. He spends the first half of the book angry at her because he blames her for his unexplainable attraction to her. He keeps asking himself, "Why?"
Why does he like her? She's obviously broken and he admits he has no interest in her story at all. He doesn't care what happened to her. He doesn't have time for all her baggage. He spends the first 50% of the book unsure about her.

He even has to call his Mother for her approval.

What?!? If a guy I was dating needed to do this, I'd be out the door in a flash.
Come on. You know we all would.

After mommy dearest gives him the "A-OK" (phew!, lucky Kerry!) He decides it's time to finally claim "what's kinda-sorta his"

But WAIT! *gasp!*

First he needs to show her what HORRIBLE people her ex and his new wife are!
(dun, dun, duuuun)

And how does he do this? By taking her to dinner and letting them spew nasty words all over her as she covers in fear in a booth.
Sure, he stands in front of her, but he LETS them say hurtful, ugly things. Never stops them, never interrupts them.
Why? Because apparently, she needed to hear all of this so she understands how horrible they really are.

Yeaaah..... because she didn't know this already?

Honestly, I hated that scene so much, I almost put my kindle down.
Again.
It's already taken me four days to get this far. This has NEVER happened to me in a Jordan Silver book before.
It's slow, boring, severely lacking in sex, which should be a crime, really. It took 60% for them to finally do the deed and by this time I had kinda written the book off.
C'mon! Don't judge me! It's a JS book. We're all here for the same reason.

Ahem, anyway

In the beginning, my heart broke for Kerryanne. I felt pain for all she had been through. Jordan Silver did a great job in pulling on my heart strings. But she should have left it at that.
Instead,, she drags us through it over and over and over again, until it became way too much.
I know in a few of her other books, she's had a tendency to do this, but I didn't care. I LOVED the stories!
Here though, it's magnified ten-fold.

I recommend this book if you're looking for heartbreaking drama, a girl that finally (emphasis on finally) gets her revenge, and a longer JS book.

(But in all actuality, the book may have been longer than usual, but the story wasn't if you took away all of the respective information.)

I love Jordan Silver. I have every book she's ever written. She's my guilty pleasure. The author I turn to when I want a sure thing. But after Cord, and now this, I'm just not sure what's going on with her. I'm crossing my fingers that she'll move back to giving me awesome stories with drool-worthy alpha males that make my heart swoon.

What can I say about this book that would have you fall in love with it? Not much I can say only that you have to read!!! Jordan I don't know how you do it but the raw emotions that you pulled from the characters is just priceless. Its like Kerryann emotions you could feel the heartache and pain that she went through. But you could feel the joy love and happiness that came after she finally let go of the pasted and placed her future in Kyles hands. Now Kyle is an Alpha male all the way! His no non since take charge had me fanning myself! Thank you Jordan for another great read couldn't put it down! Can't wait for the next one!!

Improved but...

This book is an improvement over others I've read by Me. Silver because the editing is much improved but still has some formatting issues.
I issue with all of the multiple births she uses. For instance in this one she gives birth to surprise triplets 8 weeks early & they have no issue. At 32 weeks their lungs would not be functioning properly. They would have all been in NICU a MINIMUM of 8 weeks. They would have all been extremely small especially if she only looked as if she carried one baby. Author needs to do better.
My next issue is the divorce. Even the worst lawyer would have gotten her at least her personal property.
A willing suspension of disbelief only goes so far.
